The plan (at the moment that is) is to have a crack for some redfins, i am torn between going back to my roots and getting the rive out and fishing the wag, or going speci and getting the alarms out.

I do have an idea of where to go, but if anybody has seen any roach anywhere, i would appreciate it if you could give me a heads up to the general area (don't want to pinch a swim, just some help finding these elusive giants)

To make matter even worse, i will then be back up for the last days of the current ticket (more rain....... )

hello mark i know were i would start if i get time i will go sit one evening to see if they are still rolling in the same spot i will keep you posted

I think you are seeing hybrids ..... they show fairly well and were common in certain areas a few months ago. They are not roach though.

Having sat there in the winter for quite some hours (winter dawn and dusk is THE time for roach spotting) I have never seen one yet.

i always thought that hybrids were sterile so what ever two species make up the hybid must still exist in the lake.

Bream are there Ralph which do spawn although I believe the surviving fry are the primary diet for the grebes. I don't know if hybrids are sterile .... I have to wonder why they should be but that is something for another time. The thing is they are quite large fish (beyond food size for predators - for predators read cormorants) so they are a fair few years old. Also, visually and going on the ones Martin has caught they all appear to be of a similar size which points to either one year class or they have reached a maximum size. Either way they are not young fish so it is possible (and very likely in my sad opinion) that one half of the union, namely the Roach are now no longer there with the (hopeful) exception of some very big fish once again over predator friendly size.

My opinion. I have fished some very good Roach waters over the years and in ALL of them, winter at dawn or dusk has been THE time to assess the waters potential for silver stocks. Apex is dead at those times (apart from the Carp, big Bream and hybrids).

im nearly certain that hybrids are sterile when you cross a canary with a linnet you get a mule these birds sing well but dont breed . cross a horse with a donkey you get a mule but mules cant breed so i can not believe that hybrid fish breed.i still have some roach in my pond at home that i reared from fry from hykeham they show all signs of running true e.g fin counts lateral line counts and fin positions if they breed in my pond i have no idea as all spawn be it from the carp tench or goldfish is rapidly comsumed by the rest of the fish.

for what its worth, has anyone else seen the rudd shoal? ive seen them close up and i know a rudd when i see one beautiful gold bars maybe 2lb a piece. i saw them only 10 yds out taking a hatch and it was impressive to say the least.as for the roach ive seen fish like paul has, i think i was with him when i saw them??
ive fished the lake on and off since cemex took it over and have spent a lot of time walking a looking, and ive seen the roach maybe 4 times in 4 years, im sure they are there they just take a LOT of finding.
no-one mentions the tench much either but ive had 2 in 4 years, ok their hard to find but 200 acre, its gonna be hard.
please dont be defeated by the birds and the iffs buts and maybes, fish the dream and believe

bit early for the rudd to shoal another month by my past records last years diary shows the shoal must have covered an acre it was massive i could not get as close as i would have liked but on a good day with the light favourable i could see them ok and they were in the same place as they have been for years.
i have been associated with hykeham since the mid seventys and its always been an unpredictable water.one thing that is consistant is the fact that when the workings were in full swing and the water was always cloudy the roach and rudd were easy pickings. then when working was stopped to move from the millenium lake and setting up to work the factory lake the water cleared and the weed grew and catches dropped off.then the work started on the factory lake the fish started feeding again.when the factory lake was finished the water cleared and the weed grew and the fish stopped being caught.then the company started dredging the west end with the suction dredger the water clouded the weed died and the fish started to get caught again.dredging stopped the weed grew the water cleared the fish stopped being caught.thats fact i could back this up with dates but im not going in my loft for my old records just to prove a point.
