View Full Version : Plasma Screens
Any experts out there. I'm seriously considering getting one of these with the prices coming down steadily.
Are they all just monitors - ie. I need a tuner etc... or are they just like a regular telly.
I'll be running it through pukka home cinema system but just want to know if I'll be sitting there in a years time a few grand poorer with much better deals available and feeling like a tw*t 'cos I couldn't wait.

technology always gets better mate,
Boils down to if you are happy with what you have or not, and if not how far / how much will it take you to be happier,
Personally i would say save the money and spend it on a set of new rods,
I was in RicherSounds today (new DVD player) and saw their 42" widescreen LG plasma.
No fans, so super thin and it was playing Lord of the Rings, absolutely awesome.
2500 bar to you sir

A veritable bargain, and it looks cool as well.

Plasma screens will come down in price a bit but they won't plummet like other audio visual goods.
The reason for this is that the technology that goes into the actual screens themselves (i.e. not the electronics that make them work) is very expensive anyway, basically there are no cheap shortcuts to making them and as such there is a lower limit for production costs.
It's the same with TFT displays on laptops, if you buy a decent one from a main brand manufacturer (with a proper pentium processor rather than a celeron or AMD) they haven't really come down in price much for the same reason, TFT as a technology is expensive.
Go for it, I can't see them dropping too dramatically. Let me know via pm which model you are looking at and how much it is and I'll see if I can get you one a bit cheaper, and don't fogrt to work out which stand you want as there will be 3 types, wall mount, normal floor stand or pivoting stand and ask about speaker systems and whether they are included, all these are extra's which can add anothe £1000.00 or so.
Hope that helps mate.
Crispy
Crispy, you obviously know more about these things than me........but......they are coming down in price. Wasn't that long ago when the price was far,far higher than it is today.
A while back i was reading about these screens, and a reputable dealer said they now sell as many in a week, as they did in a year a few years previously.
Miller
That's because they were from 10k upwards.
I remember the first cheap one to hit the market and that was priced at about 8 or 9 grand a couple of years ago.
Nowadays they're 4k max.
Exactly, so they are coming down in price.
Still blooming expensive though, not something for the masses yet. I guess thats the thing preventing prices coming down even further.

LG or Daewoo are probably the cheaper options at the moment on the 42" Plasmas. Fujitsu are a bit more pricey but better product. 50" and 60" Plasmas are coming on board now which will bring the price of the 42"'s right down. You will have to buy a TV Tuner, and wall brackets or desk stands too remember. expect 42's at under £2k in 3 or 4 months time.
the pixel count is [censored], but havng no fan is good, the fan is the biggest complaint I get when installing screens.
....you don't need to buy a tv tuner for it, as you can utilise your video/DVD recorder tuner....
Watch out for the wall/floor/table top brackets, these will add 250-400 bar onto the price of your screen....
Most people I fit plasmas for have sky digi which is even better.
I hope Ian won't mind me posting this.
If anyone is considering buying one, get the model number and a quote from your local shop and then let me know, I have a computer company and we sell a lot of these to companies who use them fro presentation purposes.
In some cases I might be able to save you a few quid so send a PM and I'll get a price for you, let me know how much you have been quoted and I can beat my supplier up on price.
Crispy
