DVD regions

I have a DVD hardware on my laptop, but have never actually used it yet.
I'm looking at some DVD's on ebay, but have no idea about regions....can someone clue me in please>

Allibee - the DVD software will normally let you set the region but with a limited number of changes. If your very lucky it will be multi-region and you can play what you like.
