A couple of questions regarding lure fishing:

Does anyone on here lure fish from time to time? I have really starting to enjoy lure fishing in the last couple of years and as my confidence in the technique has grown I seem to have caught more and more. Also it is a great way to introduce new comers to fishing as it is not sitting behind motionless rods for hours on end - you are always on the move and casting which keeps people interested. If you catch a pike the chances are it is going to be more than a couple of onces and this seems like a monster if you haven't caught a fish before.

This sort of leads me onto my second question - why can't we lure fish for pike during the summer months? The pike are at there most active and you can have some spectacular sport on top water lures. I can understand not allowing bait fishing during the warmer months due to the increased speed in which a fish will take and turn a bait but I have never seen a belly hooked pike on a lure. Is there any chance of allowing lure fishing during the summer?

If there are any lure fisherman out there what is your favourite RMC venue for lure fishing - mine is probably Chertsey due to the deep water right upto the bank and a good head of Perch & Pike.

Any feedback or comments welcome.

I bought a lure rod and reel, both six shooters and dead cheap!(£70 for both if you shop around)
Basically I like to have a day thrashing the water occasionally but while carp rods can be used at a push, they knacker you out after a few hours.
Going to try surface lures soon, for excitement it has to be on a par with surface fishing for carp.

Tom,

the best water I have lure fished is undoubtably Shepperton... I am probably gifted with being able to cast a 3oz lure 150+ yards but this is not always required. I have found small spinners and even flies fished on a fly rod account for a lot of pike and perch.

If you want some information on Lure fishing at shepperton I will readily give you the information I have accured from the venue and the best swims & lure patterns. Priveate me or if anyone else is interested I will post it as a general post for all to see.

Thanks Ian,

I know that the fishes welfare has to come first and you are totally right in saying that they need much better handling and longer to recover in the summer - I suppose I will have to keep my summer lure fishing on the river and to some other pits I fish.

Thanks for the feedback

Hello Bob,
As Neil has mentioned you can get away with using a light carp rod and any fixed spool with 8 to 15lb line depending on the kind of lures you are using.
To get the best out of using lures any of the lure rods on the market will be fine but as with most things you get what you pay for. The Shimano Technium medium spinning rod is the rod I have got my eye on at the moment - it's light, has a nice action and you can get it for about £50. Couple this with a 3000 or 4000 size reel with a fastish retrive - most feeder reels are ideal and that its.
The real cost can come in buying the lures - there are so many to choose from and they all look so pretty! Harris Angling have the best selection and offer reasonble prices and v.good service. Other than obviously you need a wire trace and your fishing.
If you didn't own any of the above gear I would say you could get fishing with a reasonble selection of lures for £75 to £100.
