daveh,
I think this should be on one of the main boards which are visited by most of the user's.
Thanks daveh,
Bob

It shouldn't go on any of the boards at all - it's a hoax.....just like a lot of these sort of warnings...a mobile phone cannot currently be infected by a virus...it doesn't have sufficient computing power. that may all change as PDAs and mobile phones merge but for now there is just no way a virus can get on a phone.

Hi funky so how did it infect my sons two mates phones last week then

i think someone is having you on....i'll explain....below is copied from the Sophos anti virus website....

If you receive a phone call and your mobile phone displays !?UNAVAILABLE!? on the screen (for most of digital mobile phones with a function to display in-coming call telephone number), DONT ANSWER THE CALL. END THE CALL IMMEDIATELY. IF YOU ANSWER THE CALL, YOUR PHONE WILL BE INFECTED BY THIS VIRUS. This virus will erase all IMIE and IMSI information from both your phone and your SIM card, which will make your phone unable to connect with the telephone network. You will have to buy a new phone. This information has been confirmed by both Motorola and Nokia. There are over 3 million mobile phone being infected by this virus in USA now. You can also check this news in CNN web site: Please forward this information to all your friends who have digital mobile phones.

see the similarity between this and the text you posted...ok not identical but too similar for coincidence... this is from a report about a hoax virus being sent round...the url for which is:

<a target="_blank" href=http://sophos.com/virusinfo/hoaxes/unavail.html>http://sophos.com/virusinfo/hoaxes/unavail.html</a>

sophos are a leading anti virus software provider and do know what they are talking about...the only vaguely related real virus is one called timofonica which generated thousands of span sms messages from PCs that were sent to customers of mobistar in spain...and that was the PC that was infected not the phone...

i'm not trying to make you look stupid just trying to stop the perpetration of hoax stories - which generate more [censored] email and the like than real viruses most of the time...i work in IT and it's a pain in the a***....

on the other hand if two of your son's mates have had their phones wiped by a phone call i humbly apologise and i'd get onto nokia sharpish if i were you /forum/images/icons/smile.gif

I work in the mobile telecommunications industry and I can confirm that this is 100% Hoax. This message has been doing the rounds for 2 years now and I have lost count of people who I have had to explain this too.

I feel sorry for your son's friends, but if their phones have been locked/wiped/etc then I would contact the service provider first to find out why and if no joy, to contact the manufacturers for them to take a look at them.
