View Full Version : Fishy Photographs..
Years ago, I had some fishy photo's blown up to 6" x 9" by a guy who advertised in some carp mags under the name of A1 Photo's. Is there anybody out there who knows if this guy is still in business, or if there is anyone else out there who is able to offer a service similar?
What made this guy so good was the fact that he was a fisherman, knew exactly what you wanted to be able to appreciate in your pics, i.e. how to crop them, and also played around with the exposure levels to make everything look just how it should be.
Any takers..?

Any of your mates got a PC with a scanner. If so you can scan in your photo and then crop out what you don,t want.It is possible to then enlarge the photo to a reasonable size.I have just brought a Hewlett Packard 840c printer and using photo paper have managed to blow up some of my original photo's and print them out to quite a high standard. With a bit more practice I will be able to do a better job.Any way it,s fun trying and while the weather is like it is your better off inside.
....yes Neil I have an Epson photo scanner which I can scan in negatives etc. but I still don't find the quality of print - even on the correct paper - to be as good as a quality developed photo's. Maybe I need a bit more practice, or different software? There's also the time factor too!

Hiya,
Just thought I would say that although you can get some excellent print from these home computer printers. To get anything similar to an original photograph you would need to get hold of a subliminal dye printer or the like. These printers use a heated three scan print which actually sort of melts the different layers which makes it much more photo like. The printers that we normally use at home use dots to create the image. Even with thousands of dots per inch they will not be the same as photos unless a much more professional printer is used.

Hi Andy my new printer is a HP 840c and this gives me a good picture especially if it's for putting on the wall.

The dye subliminal printer that we used at college was capable of printing up to A3 in size but the prints were obviously much more expensive compared to a dot matrix type. I know that if you want to place your pictures on the wall then a printer similar to the one RiverCarper has just bought are fine but if you wish to complete say an album with images produced from the computer then some manipulation will be required. When scanning an image there is nearly always some loss of sharpness and every print should be run through a couple of filters. Each printer is also different so when you buy a new one a few test prints should be done so that differences in colour and tone can be checked. When you are doing this then notes should be taken so that when you have got the correct values for say colour changes then these can then be applied to each print that you wish to produce. It is a known fact that colour balnce between screens, printers and scanners are always slightly different so these calulations and test are necessary so that prints that look like the originals can be produced. Sorry Neil I have started waffling again lol. Its annoying when someone is qualified in a subject hey?
All very interesting and valid Andy and I'sure it makes sense to those more intelligent types asking questions on the thread. As for me well you have just got a job printing my pictures

.....blast from the past this post, but spookily enough, I have found the guy I was looking for in my original post....only been fishing with him the last two seasons!!
The good news is that his buisness is up & running so if you need any quality photo enlargements/reprints/touching up ( http://www.rmcangling.co.uk/forum/images/graemlins/blush.gif ) etc., you know who to get in contact with as he's a member of this forum....Kodak...who else??!
As mentioned in previous posts, he is an angler too, so he knows how to crop your photo & will expose the print to optimise how it should look.
As a matter of interest, Adobe have just brought out a new Creative Suite that includes completely updated versions of Photoshop, Illustrator, GoLive and something else the name of which eludes me atm ... much cheaper than buying them all seperately ...

Oh and nothing kicks the [censored] out of photoshop Billy http://www.rmcangling.co.uk/forum/images/graemlins/smile.gif
Trust me on this one.
I spend hours everyday drum scanning, photo retouching, and producing proofs. There is only one professional package up to the job (excluding Quantels mega money paintboxes) and thats Photoshop. People who reckon that they have found some numpty bit of cheap software that 'kicks photoshops butt', generally cant use photoshop well enough to make a judgement. After 15 years of using it, I still havent found anything else I would trust.
Oh and just to offend a few more people, the tonal range on Dye Subs is poo. They are incapable of holding a decent dot at below about 5% and generally there grey balance leaves a lot to be desired. Also its incorrect to say that most home ink jets print with dots, they dont, they use nozzels to spray the ink using a stocastic screened pattern, theres no screening taking place, so there cant be any dots. Look at an ink jet under a linen tester, you wont find any screen angles!!
The only inkjet on the market which does 'screen' to any decent level is Agfas six colour Mega Sherpa, but its A0 size and costs 20K.
....what's the latest release of Photoshop?
Stand alone I believe its still version 7. However its now being rebundled as Photoshop CS (creative suite). I think this has just got more inbuilt features like go-live. And its of course OSX native.
Thats the one Singy, cheers ... only use PS and Illustrator myself though
