View Full Version : Fly fishing for Pike
I think this is a question for Ian. Fly fishing for pike is a new and potentially interesting method. From an earlier post I know that Tony Scorpio has a go with fly gear for coarse fish from time to time.
Are there any RMC waters that have i. A reasonable head of pike and ii. Fairly clear banks for fly casting ? For example Theale 1 has (or had...) some good pike but fly fishing would be impossible due to the heavy tree growth round the lake.
Thoughts welcome !
Hello John,
You could try Shepperton - there are a couple of clearish swims but I am not sure just how much room you would need for your back cast. There is also the danger of hooking one of the horses there - I expect they fight quite well!
I used to see a couple of guys regularly fly fishing for pike on the Thames at Penton Hook - they used to wade into the water and then cast up and down the margins as the banks are quite overgrown there. Maybe you could consider doing something similar if you can find anywhere that has gently sloping margins.

Thanks to both Tom and Ian. Quick extra question for Ian - any powerlines over/near Frimley 4 ? I don't fancy being the nearest path to earth for several trillion volts - suppose it's a rapid way of warming up on a cold day tho'...
Thanks Ian - I will let you know if I decide to go ahead. It will be an October start date...usual RMC pike rules apply, I assume.
Ian - you've already reached the outer edge of my knowledge of the subject... April may well be good but it's also approaching prime time for trout, which remain my own number one target.
I have a feeling September and October might be very good for pike on the fly, though. Weeds dying down, fish still hungry and getting into top condition, fry and small fish around and active. Especially if we have pleasant early autumn weather.
I would have thought you would have kept September free for the trout.... best month of the year when the trout go for the daddies and the fry.... I have always had most success with Pike on the fly in the summer.... magic way of catching pike... make sure you have the wire trace and it aint so easy to cast with the wire on board. If you let me know when you are going I could probab;ly meet up with you and we could give it a bash..... cats whiskers, tadpoles, gold heads all work well.... intermediate line if you are brave... floating if not /images/forum/icons/smile.gif

Sounds good Tony - watch this space...
I've only just seen these posts. I wouldn't mind joining you both when you give it a go !
