What would people say was more important, getting on the right bait or fish location ?

The best bait in the world won't get you a bite if there are no fish in the swim.So LOCATION.
Without a doubt it has to be fish location... it is always worth a 30 minute stare at the water before setting up, works for me every time.

Location - definitely !
Bait is of secondary importance.
Don't really have to say this but, LOCATION every time as well! With the majority of fish in the majority of lakes, if you find fish, and they are feeding, you could put pretty much anything in front of them and have a very good chance of a pick up. There are so many quality baits out there now that they are all much of a muchness and will all catch carp, so the only thing left to do is to find the carp, and get a bait as close to them as possible.
Also getting on fish adds to the confidence levels!

lol me too. Location has to be the key. The amount of fish I have caught by watching the water for signs of them and then when i see one jump or head and shoulder i have cast on top of it and then caught one is just rediculous. I couldnt tell you how many times it has worked for me.
