Chat Room?

Would it be viable to set up a real time chat room for members of RMC, I know it sounds tacky but it does work. Maytbe you could use a password & membership number to log on. What do other members think? I think it would be a valuable addition to angling lines. Web based servers for chat are a bit slow, irc servers are pretty good but you will need an irc server program.

This could be done, and looking at the amount of people we have online at any one time, I reckon it would work too, though the idea of having a password to login would scare people off - I don't think there would be a need for this !

Your right in saying that web based chat rooms do "bog down" a server, but I reckon I could get around this without too much difficulty... they also tend to use a lot of bandwidth !!

But... seeing that Angling Lines doesn't need approval for messages now, is that not instant enough ? By the time you've replied to a message and view the forums list again the message is there, is it not ?

I can see your point but you can get some cracking conversations going in chat rooms, as you can get the opinnions of more than one person at one time. It may scare people at first and also you will need a few moderator types to keep their eye on the room as you can get idiots sometimes entering the room. One thing I found, it does help if you have a room with a certain subject like angling. Have a think about it. I suppose the other way you could do it is put a link on the site for MSN messenger maybe or ICQ then at least you can have a chin wag with you fishing buddies fior free.

Spot on idea!!!!!
Most forums i have been on operate a "real time" chat room.
This is a much better system.Why not run the present system and a real time chat room side by side!!!!....MAXIMUS

I think this would be a great idea, although as Billyo says the posts do go up fairly quickly. But being able to "chat" in a room with other people being able to put their views and opinions accross aswell would be a good addition to an already great site.
