View Full Version : Foot & Mouth Disease

I've been listening to Radio 5 Live a lot recently trying to find out what effects the Foot & Mouth could have on our beloved sport.

Apparently if it becomes serious enough it will not be wise for us to go fishing, for fear of spreading the disease, until the disease is gone.

It appears that during the 1967 outbreak, the majority of anglers didn't go fishing for about 3 months and they weren't too upset as it was for the good of the countyside.

How would you feel if you were aksed not to go fishing?

P.S. Ian, have you any information that may help us.

I don't think it would completely, it might help for the immediate vacinity but it can be spread by the wind.

I'm not certain on this, but the virus may have a limited lifespan whilst airborne. The latest outbreak was caused by the airborne method which was 5 miles from a quarantined farm.

But the virus may well live longer in a solid medium, mud etc which is why anything in contact with the ground is disinfected. If not the spread of the disease would be even worse.

Or the lifespan is the same in either medium, but the spread via wheeled vehicles is alot faster potentially than that caused by weather conditions.

Either way the point about boot dips etc is quite valid.

I think boot dips would be a fair idea and a move forward but if anglers are fishing more than one water are they going to dip bivvy groundsheets, unhooking mats, landing nets and anything else that comes into contact with the ground.

What I'm asking is that if you were advised not to go how would you feel?

Surely boot dips wouldnt be much good anyway as what about car tyres etc they would have to go through some sort of dip as well maybe. I have just been told that a lot of the Royal parks are shut for at least a week or so round here as a precaution i think.

Sorry, I'm not being very clear today, it could be a huge issue very quickly and it WILL affect us if it gets much worse, just wanted to hear peoples views, mine are generally to be cautious and if it came to it not go fishing, you never know we might end up with an enforced closed season this year?

If the advise was not to go then I wouldnt.

If I thought the livelihoods of farmers (who have not had the best of times recently) could be affected by me rambling around the countryside fishing , then I would stay at home.

If it is that serious that we are advised not to go fishing then we must not go.Simple as that.

If you read the catch reports on the site you will all see that Kingsmead 1 has been closed. So keep you fingers crossed that it is all cleared up before the social. If not we will do it in the future.
