View Full Version : 'Cheap bivvies'
I know that bivvies have appeared as the subject of posts before, but I would like some help in selecting a 'cheap' bivvy for occasional summer use only. A back injury and an arthritic knee means that overnighters in the winter are no longer really an option for me, but I reckon that I can still manage in the summer!! (assuming that we get one).
As I will only use it occasionally I don't want to spend a fortune so I think that we can forget the titans and most of the fox range apart from the classic dome perhaps, but what if anything is any good of the rest?
Has anyone seen the new giant bivvy. At just over £100 it is in the sort of price range that I want to look at (max about £150), but I haven't been able to see one? Or would I be better off with an oval brolly and possibly an overwrap for those wet nights which are such a feature of a true English summer?
Am I likely to see anything at the Thorpe park sale? Has anyone been in the past who can tell me if bivvies are likely to be on sale??
So many questions? has anyone got some helpful answers please!
I'f your max is 150 then for 140 you can get the hi gear mangrove dome which is a smaller version of the harefield dome andy reviewed in the tried and tested secion.
it really looks good.
cheers
sam
Why not go for a small dome tent, I have one of those with a waterproof fly sheet, only cost me £40 and it's just as good as a bivvy, takes seconds to erect and is easy to carry.... just a thought.
Tony
why not look into a second hand one April and May is the best time as the tackle tart are all upgradeing last years top bivvies to impress their mate this season on the bank!!!!!
Take advantage!

for £140 the best buy realy is the hi-gear mangrove which Ive had for a while. They can be erected in seconds. No more pushing poles ect. It goes up like a brolly and will not take any longer than 3 or 4 minutes to have the whole thing up and pegged down. They used to be endorsed by gardner and lee jackson but they are made buy a camping company and they are superb. For £140 quid you want find a better buy.
all season with
Winter skin
h.duty ground sheet.
storm poles and attachements.
for £100.

Hello Boo,
I bought a Giant bivvy a couple of months back and I am quite happy with it - I picked it up for £90 new and it really is pretty good for that sort of money. It isn't huge and you couldn't fit 2 bedchairs in it but it isn't designed as a two man bivvy. I was interested in getting one as it has quite a large porch area and quite a high front which makes getting in and out a little easier. Quite pleased with it and I would reccomend it.
A friend has just bought a Diawa 2 man bivvy for £130 and it is huge - enough room for a small family! The material is quite thick and it looks like a good buy - time will tell.
I am tempted to get an oval and an overwrap for the summer though as it means you can move about alot quicker and you can't always pitch up a bivvy in some swims.
Keep an eye on http://www.carplines.com as he very often has some good deals.
Hope this is of help

I brought the Cypri 1 man dome last summer and its pucka, keeps me dry and warm always. My mates has got the 2 man version and this is excellent as well just deeper. For about £80-90 you can't go wrong.
Not sure about Boo threading all those poles.........look at his post...bad back, bad knee etc...........must be getting on in years yet his profiles says middle aged!,(mmmmmmmm..)
Sorry Unc.
Smarts
Smarts - You probably are too big to be put across my knee, you young wippersnapper but you certainly deserve it! It's a good job that despite my physical deterioration I have still managed to retain a sense of humour - at least I think I have???
I've read the report on the Harefield in Tried and Tested and am impressed. Having a quick trawl through the magazines I can't find anywhere that seems to stock the Hi - Gear Mangrove or Harefield. Can anyone suggest a supplier?
All help much appreciated!

You could go to their web site and look for their stockists or go to ours and type in Gardner into the Directory search box and it will give you a list of their dealers.

Many thanks for your reply. I have been in touch and ordered a catalogue. A phone call and they have given me a price of £149.00. Does anyone know of them being cheaper elsewhere? That price only gives me £1 from my top limit!
