Yay,i have a ticket and was wondering if i could have a look round during the close season, who do i need to contact if this is allowed.Oh and hello syndicate this is a dream for me.
Cheers
Hi Dave,
Give Sue a ring at the office, and she should be able to OK it. Think she'll probably send you an authorisation letter if you're a new member without a permit yet.
Its an awesome place, and I'm positive you'll love every minute down there!
I'll see you down there at some point,

I've been on the waiting list for about a year, how long does it take to get into Horton????

i got a question, mainly to Jim Shelly,
do you or anyone else for that matter get p!ssed off catching the same fish over and over,
as you cant really say that you have had 3 40's from the church lake can ya, instead 1 fish 3 times,
i know shoulders is indeed a stunning fish and would dearly love to have it one day but just think it may have took ya bait 2 mins b4 the parrott was in ya swim,,,
just wanted ya thought really on repeat captures.
let down ???? or still chuffed ?????
andy
I know for a fact that jim has reeled in baits from shoulders so he doesn't catch it. fair play to him give some one eles the chance. if he is getting repeats on that fish he doing some thing right and if the take is at 4 in the morning not a lot you can do! i suppose the only other thing you could do is to tell shoulders not to eat jim's bait!!!!!!
andy_w21uk
16-04-2002, 11:53
"pulling ya bait away from a known 40lb+ fish", Mr Shelly has it too easy.
does he accept bribes etc for learning his skills.
cant say i would be so considerate to the others anglers in that situation so far play to the geezer, Hope to meet a few of the top rods when i finally get on the boat pool.

ask the full time angler do they feel the pressure and they do,they have to be catching and catching big!
it's not all easy mate,40's don't come crawling up the rods you know!
*scott*
imho there is less pressure to the full time angler than most of us have to endure every single day of our working lives. the difference is that us 9-5ers have the additional pressure of having to catch our fish within a much reduced timeframe...
LOUGHNANE
16-04-2002, 20:59
The point im makin is,they have to catch to put food on the table(their own choice of career) from writing article's,doing show's etc.
*scott*
i think there are only a handful of full time anglers who actually do it for a living. correct me if i am wrong, but you see the same faces at the shows (and this is only a proportion of the well known brigade) and the articles are usually by the same people, again a small proportion. there are many more people who literally have all the time in the world to pursue their favourite pasttime.
doesn't sound too pressured to me. if you blank one day, hey, there's always tomorrow. or is it, if you blank one day, hey, there's always three weeks from now when i'll reschedule my responsibilities to enable me to try again...
Christ who cares! Good on them if they are full time anglers, they are doing something they enjoy. and if they can make a living out of it good on them, dont knock them!
LOUGHNANE
17-04-2002, 13:03
Amen!
I thought that was a reply not a sermon!
I'd certainly agree Bazz there is a lot less pressure on a full time angler than that which most of us endure on a daily basis. I don't hear too many pro Bass anglers complaing that its a really hard life being a professional fisherman. But I do hear the US Department of Energy complaining every single day.
Wannabe, wannabe.
LOUGHNANE
17-04-2002, 15:51
Bit of a difference between Bass angler's and carper's i imagine!
*scott*
well you only imagine.
What do you think pro Bass anglers do? any idea?
andy_w21uk
17-04-2002, 16:47
difference is that bass anglers take people out and guide them, which isn't cheap,
carp anglers dont.
andy
well actually they fish in Bass Tornaments that last many days for huge sums of money; $75,000 at the one I saw last year. Very, very skilled anglers indeed.
Professional anglers - easy enjoyable life.

hi andy ?,
i am glad ive found this..these kind of comments from you.thanx nick for telling him that i have reeled in my hook bait from the mighty shoulders...i have on 4 occasions.
as you seem to have a problem with me ..as a full time angler..joke..laughing...take it from me fella ..go try it before you comment.......listen andy..i would dearly love to catch that parrot and his m8s that i have not caught.. fish with so much history..maybe thats why you dont understand..
as you think its easy to catch these 40 pound plus fish to order...then go out and and prove it son......................iam laughing..

HI ,
pressure to catch..no way i would fall into that...carp fishing to me is a passion..that i enjoy..and would never let pressure come into it...thats why i fish some of the hardest waters in this country....i have nothing to prove ..to no one...fact.

And so so all of us!!!!!! Andy, there are thousands of Carp anglers out there, and only a few are VERY good at what they do. Jims obviously Cr*p, so dont worry about him, but dont slag those off that are, however much time they have! Enjoy you`re fishing, and the issues which affect our carp!

Just wondering how the place fishes in Autumn as i know about the legendary summers and not-so winters. Most of my time will be Sep-Nov although i do love winters and will probably go for it,then celebrate blanking. Also what are the rules....any restrictions?I think i read that slings and sacks have to be tagged and kept up there, does this apply to nets and mats as well?I know i should wait for the list of rules that accompany the ticket, but just need some advance advice to allocate some cash.
Much thanks and regards.
Dave Browne
Hi Dave,
The Church normally fishes really well until the end of October (although some years this month is very hard). Not sure on the mats and nets, but there are no silly rules, just common sense, good angling rules applys.
At the start of season BBQ Del with run through the do's and don'ts to new members so it is well worth going, even if you are not in the draw. The boss normally does one of his awsome feeds too, so you wont need to eat for a week!
PM me if you want any more info!
Dave,
Slings and Sacks can be tagged and left there if its easier for you. Otherwise, they need to be dipped on arrival at each visit. Make sure these are big enough, as well as your Net and especially your unhooking mate.
Del can sell massive Gardner sacks (suitable for the extra long Grassies!) cheaper than the rrp if you're interested, as well as the big Quantum unhooking mats, for a very reasonable price!
Other than that, no real restrictions as such, although as Garth says, Del will go through all the do's and don'ts at the BBQ. So, I will see you there......

Just a quick correction on this.
Sacks MUST be tagged and left at Horton permenantly. All other eqpt must be dipped on arrival at the venue. Lots of members now leaving ALL nets slings etc at Horton.
Anyone found using an un tagged sack with be in trouble

some are hitting 30 now bud. they seem to have learnt from the old carp in there, and do the disappearing act!
good luck, see you all at the draw!
**sam**
the biggest one so far is 31 pound if you come before 12 there will be a stroll round the pond to show everybody were to fish and not to fish ground rules so you all have guide line to help you along
See you there

Anyone seen No-Name recently?
Be interesting to see how big she is when she's next out.
Quality Fish.
Sam
She will be 36 or 37, and not the big 40 everyone says she will be I reckon!
Didn't a lot of people think she was 40 when Yuppie had her at 36?
whaen was she last out?

that no-name isn't a real grower at all.I remember her being caught from fox pool at 29+ to dave moore and that over 10 years ago.

Yeah quality history fish though, [censored] weights when theres fish like that. Saw her in the water last august.

LOUGHNANE
22-05-2002, 22:38
We talk as if 36 isn't big enough !LOL
*scott*
Yeah what is just because a fish isn't over say 40, doesn't mean that its not big or pukka. The amount of people you see who are just fishing for 40s and thats it, don't care about any other fish.
Sam
No name is in Rob Maylins book, Fox Pool. The honeycomb fish at 30lb. Dave lane had her at 29lb early on off the platauex, and then the fish was caught at 34/35 twice over the next few years, by bigfoot, and I might be wrong, but I think uncle Jim had her. In 1998 she hadn't been out for 4 years and everyone was saying she was over 40lb easily. When she finally made a mistake she was caught by Ian Russel at over 35lb.
The weight is irrelivent though as she really is an awsome fish.
She has come out a bit more in recent years with both Dave 'Yuppie' Vigures and starman bagging her at 36lb+, so she may push 40lb over the next few years!
Mind you Tetleys was also been spoken about at been over 40lb, again not having been out for 4 years, and she came out at 34lb. Again who cares about the weight when a common looks as good as she does!
Funny how some of the fish in horton look really big whilst the two biggest (not inc scaley) look a lot smaller than they really are.

Anyone see any bigg'uns at the BBQ?
*scott*
Whilst walking around before the draw there was a big fish that boshed in Church Bay, i didn't see the fish but the wake was huge, also i saw a low 20 head and shoulder in front of Scooters.....The other whopper i saw was the size of the number that i got drawn out as 30 something, is that a peg on the stock pond!!!!! How did everyone else do? Happy or not.
Did Viv do as well as he did last year?
Sam
Does anyone want to guess the total stock levels in Horton for me?
Ie how many doubles, 20's, 30's etc.
Just interested.
Thanks
James
PS Ian cheers for the info, most enlightening sir!
James,
You are looking at two definate 40s, Shoulders and the Parrot. There are quite a few 30s Thorpe Park Common, Peach, No Name, Scaley, Big Grey, Tetleys Common, Pimple, Dumpy Mirror, Black Tail, Woodcarving, Hump Backed Common, plus three or four other 30lb commons, and several of the stock fish (not really stockies now) will break 30lb this year. There are loads of 20s, probably 40-50 in total. The common are the most stunning I have ever seen!
Dont worry about a bad draw. My last year on there I came last out of the hat, and two days later had a good fish, so just keep your eyes peeled and be prepared to move. The first 24hrs in a swim in normally the most productive.
Thanks to Ian and Garth for the info!
I never knew there was that many 30's in there!
Cheers
James
Cant wait to get me ticket....
One last quick question (I promise)....
am I right in thinking its a registered Fish Farm?
Cheers
James
Like Ian says, 3 fish could do 40 thisd year. Scaley, not been out for 3 years, last out at 36lb. Could well be very big. Some say she is not there, but she is, of that Im sure. The peach could well get up there, as could the Thorpe Park common.
Loads of thirtys, and that number will increase as the stock fish push on!
Included in the doubles is a original Longfield common of about 12lb, and an awsome fish to catch.
Stupidly i declined a ticket a few years ago, but hopefully i shall be over there in a couple of season, maybe next...
LOUGHNANE
28-05-2002, 13:04
I think the thorpe park common will break the 40 barrier along with scaley.
But i have my doubts about the peach breaking it,maybe before spawning.
Any of the originals packing on weight?Shoulders has done well to go from a consistant 42 up to 44 for an old fish!
*scott*
I think you are probably right there scott. Thorpe park, might not make it this year as those fish are slow growers, but I am sure it will and what a fish!
LOUGHNANE
28-05-2002, 13:21
Ye garth,
thorpe park is the most beautiful common in england along with the brook common!
*scott*
Has to be one of them Scott for sure!
I wouldn't doubt the Peach Scott, when Vince Toms had her at 39lb 12oz she'd been in the sack a couple of hours and had shed a load of bait! If weighed immediately she could well have been 40.
The Thorpe Park, it would be lovely to see, if i remember right though the last time she was out she was a couple of onces lower than her capture the year before. No doubt a male fish, but bag her at the right time and she may well be over the magical mark.
As for Scaley, like Garth says, i'm sure she's still around and i'm sure she's big. She's got a massive frame on her, so has the potential. In fact providing she's still there and healthy she could well become the largest fish in the lake.
These Horton fish do have a tendancy to disappear every now and then for a couple of years.

Cash,
i do remember the pic of the peach at 39+,she really did look bloated-i thought it was spawn. She must have been on a serious munch!
*scott*
Go on the peach!
Could well have been a bit of spawn in her, but her steady weight (if you know what I mean) has increased steadily for the last few years. She is now normally around 37lb consistantly so could well do it. It would be great to see!
I would love to see Horton back up there with 4 or 5 40s, and all awsome fish too!

I got 11, which I am well chuffed about - 10 lower than last year, so hopefully next year I'll be first!

There were 2 out of Dog Bay - a 25lbs & a 26lbs, Del had a 29lbs and a grassie of 22lbs (I think) and now he's had the Peach - was the Peach included in your 5 Nick ? If not, what was the other one ?

No wonder Del was grinning when i asked him about the draw, any sign of a tag or two for me slings etc yet?
LOL - Royal box has produced a few Ian. Tony Parker had Linford out of there a few years ago and I remember Del stalking Starburst from the edge there a couple of years ago.
It doesn't do many though, but it also never used to get fished much, not sure now?
Plataux and one up are top swims all season, but normally produce a couple early on. In fact I think it took Harry Haskell about an hour - LOL
I also need a couple of taggs for my sling and sack I had a look through the pile in the lodge but couuld not see one with my name on it.
In the right conditions it does produce. I'm sure Del took Shoulders from there a few seasons back. Didn't Dolly have her from there also last year.
Also Weedbed bagged the Peach from the Royal Box a couple of seasons ago.
Not the best place to be though if someones in the Gate or the Dip.
