View Full Version : Carniverous Pike
Yesterday morning I went Piking. I had a float fished sardine on and the float started to move to one side a few inches. I was just about to strike when the float screamed off like a rocket and then stopped. I wound down and bent into a fish that stayed deep although something didn't feel right. After 20 minutes a croc surfaced with my sardine haging out of it's mouth with the bottom treble in it's scissors, also in it's mouth was a sizeable pike held across the back !!. I got both in and unhooked and weighed the larger fish at 17lb 10oz and then the smaller one and was astonished that it went 8lb.
I can only saaume the bigger pike picked up my bait first and then saw the other pike close by and slammed into it.
Has anyone else experienced a similar thing or is this just a freak ?. I got a friend to take a few pictures of it in the water with the other pike in it's mouth as I was bringing it in so that people would believe me.
If you watch Passion For Angling programme 5 (winter on the Kennet), Bob James located his 2 20-pounders through just such a thing as you describe happening to Chris Yates.
I remember a good few years ago a guy called Clive Loveland caught a colossal pike that only just missed the English (not British...) record on a Midlands reservoir using an 8lb Jack live bait.
If you can get hold of a copy of Falkus and Buller's book there are some mind boggling photos of 2 similar size pike where one has tried to swallow the other head first and both have died as a result.
It must have been a terrific experience for you - hope the photos are good.
I once hooked a 4lb chub that ended up being a 16lb pike, that was without the chub, I was tempted to take it as a 20 as my PB but thought it was cheating. After some antiseptic the chub swam away and so did the pike, those john wilson avons are the tops /images/forum/icons/smile.gif

I once saw a pike push a sizeable tench across the surface of the little lake at Burghfield. I could'nt see how big the pike was, but from the size of the mouth around probably a 4lb tench it must have been 20lb +. This went on for about 5 mins until I guess the pike let go. There was no way the pike could swallow the tench, but could only push it around on the surface!

All these stories remind me of the wife,Scarey.
Having fished Wraysbury 1 in the early 80's for pike, on one session I came across a small dead jack in the margins (probably no more than 2.5lbs), but the real thing about this was the clear bite mark on both its flanks, which at its widest point was just under 8 inches across. Now my best out of there was 23lb 9oz, and its jaws did not match that!
