One for the computer literate!I`ve just started using the web space provided by my ISP and want to post photos I`ve scanned onto it.My current profile pic. is one I saved from the internet and posted,I`m using the URL from my site for this and it`s ok.I`m trying to scan photos and save them as jpeg or gif files but I`m only given the option of btm,tif of html,my ISP says to use files as jpeg or gif to download to my site. Also I`m trying to change a saved pic to jpeg or gif and can`t.My software is Kodak photoshop (I think!).Any ideas or suggestions fellas?
Cheers

What you need to do is use some software that will allow you to 'Save As' a .gif or .jpeg file type. If you are using Windows 98 or newer you should be able to do this through the Paint program found at Start>Programs>Paint.

If you open your picture in this program then go to the File menu at the top of the page you should have the option of 'Save As'. Select this and then choose either a .gif or .jpeg file format form the drop down box.

This will do what you need but ideally get hold of a copy of Paint Shop Pro or Illustrator as this will give you more options & flexibility.

If this dosent work let me know as there is another little 'workaround' you can use but it's slightly more fiddly.

Sometimes you also have to change the 'mode' of an image. For example you may have an image in certain formats they wont be able to be saved as jpg files.

You can change the mode as well as the resolution of an image and then save it, then try resaving it as a jpg or gif file once this has been done.

Just an idea anyway

Tony, tried what you suggested but the options available are still only bitmap,I think the problem is in the mode/resolution as described by Andy.Andy I`ve tried re-scanning but the save options are still as before.I`ll try changing the mode/resolution to see what happens.
Thanks for the replies fellas!!

Tried altering the resolution and also looked at compressing the pic.to jpeg on the properties file.Still no change to my save options.Any further ideas?

Tried altering the mode from 24bit but can only scan in grey or lineart, there is a 48bit option but it won`t let me do this in the default resolution of 100,should I change the res./up it?The other save option I keep getting is .tif,is this format suitable?
Thanks again

I have presto page manager/imagefolio and import my tiff images onto there and can save them as jpeg. You can do this using most phot editing software, there are some available freeware off the net as well.

Its a very basic method, but if you are running Windows - most versions I think, then you can use 'paint' package. Just checked on mine and if you copy paste you pic into paint, then you can save it as a jpeg, under 'Save as' 'Save as type"

I get into paint through 'start key' 'programs' 'accessories' 'paint'

Like I said, its a bit of a basic method, but if you haven't access to any photo-editing packages it might work for the time being.

It's probably down to your Mode, as Andy has said. If you scan the images in, save them, then open them in your photo editing software. Somewhere you should have the option to change the mode from Greyscale, Index Color, RGB, CMYK, etc.

Set this to RGB and you will be able to change to JPEG format. Index Color for GIF.

Your software should come with HELP files, or a Tutorial. You might want to read these.

HTH,

Bill.

Can't see how u can't change it with these programmes. Unless u have got a demo copy then there normaly are some restrictions on thses.

Other than that get yourself a decent programe like photoshop - there ain't anything better, trust me!

When you scan your pictures what format does the software save the scanned pictures in?

Dai_wa,
Hi m8, I think that you could do with a decent piece of image editing software. Probably the best value for money piece is Paintshop Pro from JASC (<A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.jasc.com>http://www.jasc.com</A>). All in all, product, product tour, and getting started manual is about a 50mb download - it'll take an age if you connect by modem! if you do conect by modem i can help you by downloading it, burning it to CD and posting it to you if that helps. The trial version should do what you need and will probably work without registration for 30 days, after that you need to either buy a licence or ask Billyo what you can do (/images/forum/icons/wink.gif LOL). Let me know.

Thank you all for the excellent response!I have finally solved the problem,in theory,as I haven`t tried it yet!Looking through the programmes on my PC I`ve found a photo editing suite(that I didn`t know was there) which I can put my saved files into and YES...save as .jpeg,.gif and loads of others I can`t remember!!!So if it goes OK when I get round to it you`ll all be seeing my mush on the forum!
Thank you yet again!

Additional note:_
The better photo programs such as PSP7,PS6,PSElements,PS5LE will furthur allow you to vary the level of compression on saving images as JPEGS.
For web use a low to medium setting will be sufficient to speed up downloads and keep file sizes lean.
The resolution for web use (pixels across x pixels down) generally needs to be no larger than say 400 x 300 unless it`s being used a full size background for a web page.
About time this forum enabled UBB image tagging!! :)

Hi M8,
Your profile image seems to be working OK now. The only thing i would say is that you have used an image that is 770x426 pixels when the profile only accepts images 80x90 pixels. Therefore the download time is a lot slower than it could/should be.

Broken images when the URL is correct are often due to the server that the image is being hosted on being at fault: overloading on free space is often a cause!
