Myself, Smarts and Tom are joining the Boat Pool this coming season, I was just wondering if anyone had any tips.
I'm not after all your hard earned edges and secrets, just a few pointers to get us started.

Cheers in advance,
MIke.

Smarts may just settle on a bait this year fishing the boat pool!! Toothless will tell you whats going, Black Squid, Ice Red etc. Get on it, and get him to stay on it and not chop and change as he does!

What were the majority of the cats caught on last year - boilies or 'conventional' catfish tactics (live baits, fish baits etc.)? Do you know how many cats were out last year?

Cheers,

Tom

hi all,

thinking of joining the boat pool myself and was wondering what size landing net? (52 inch enough??) and if any of you guys could recommend which landing mat to get and where from, that would be much appreciated!!!

looking forward to a great season & hope you all have one too!!!

52" landing nets would be great i know that some catfish magazines advertise ones with longer narrower arms..As for unhooking mats the same the catfish magazines have them for sale..we do have a few 5ft unhooking mats scattered around the lake they are all black in colour but do please leave them at the venue for the other members to use..
Any doubts about catfish saftey etc please do ask any of the bailiffs on site we are there to help so dont be afraid to ask

Tom i fancy a go or the Bream and Tench.Using maggoys would the cats be a problem ie picking up maggot hook baits.

from what found early season last year as they become active they just seem to hoover up everything..i had a lot early season over big beds of boilies and pellet but then mr sturgeon started taking advantage of my good natured baiting it could happen the same way with maggots and remember theres 400 trout in there to contend with now there catching them 1 a chuck on maggots at the moment

I know the going bait on this particular water, looks like I'm changing again...Lol!

Many thanks for the info, really looking forward to getting on there. I have got my birthday coming up at the end of March, so am going to put in a request for a 50" net.
I am also going to make a BIG (6ft x 4ft) unhooking mat ready to use, and am going to get some bigger scales just in case (I've got Avons at the moment and if I do get lucky with the biggies, I want to be able to weigh it accurately).
Definately planning to use the Black Squid, I'd be silly to use anything else.

Here's hoping.

Mike.

Beautiful lake but relaxing? Couldn't handle it myself but best of luck to you Mike.

Have often thought about fishing the Boat Pool, if only to have a chance of catching Penny. She is one of the best looking carp around IMO.
But what i don't fancy is Catfish.
How heavily stocked is this lake with Catfish ?

Loads of cats in there mate! It is a catfish lake first and formost!

Miller,
the cats are the main species in there although you would be able to narrow your chances of getting them pretty easy and also catch the carp, Not many people have ever fished for the carp in there so they are dead easy compared to the surrounding lakes to catch, i caught a few on simple sweetcorn and also had a few on dog buiscuits so i would give it a go mate, there are some stunning carp in there and also huge tench as well which will be more than happy to take ya corn, thinking of rejoining myself maybe ???????????

The carp are not that easy to target Andy! I had cats pooing out maples, tigers and hemp on the mat when I was fishing there! They tended to push all other species out of the swim!

Andy,
Cheers for that.
I'm sorted for this year, but i'm very keen on this water for perhaps next year.
I remember seeing a picture of Penny a year or so ago, and seeing her picture again recently makes me want to have a go for her. Not the biggest carp in the world, but thats not important. Its her beauty that amazes me.

Im sorry andy i have to agree with Garth the carp in the Boat are not an easy fish to target im not saying that to hype my result but there are an aray of different species willing to take your bait before the weary carp do .For example i caught the stranger between 15-20 times this year ive see it bully off big fish just to get there first, plus theres now trout , AND ALSO THE CATS....

"dead easy compared to the surrounding lakes" !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
horton church pool, crayfish pool, K1 etc
they are still tricky but nothing compared to it's neighbours fish was my point,

Garth

True, the problem is that the tench, Bream, Cats and the Stranger (thank god he was not there when i was on) all seem to beat the carp to it. What I would find would happen would be you would catch a couple of tench and bream, and then a couple of carp before the cats pushed them all out. I tried everything I could after I caught my biggest cat to target the carp, using maple, tigers etc which I thought the cats would not like so much, but boy was I wrong. Still I have to say I loved the cats, and every minute I spent on there, so Im not complaining - It really is a top water, one of my favourite, and I might even venture back next year!

how many cats, carp did ya get out garth ????

cant remember exactly, but it was about 20 cats and 15 carp in 38 nights fishing. Had cats upto 33lb 14oz and carp to 20lb 7oz, which I think is the common Touthless is holding in the article at 25lb +. This was about 5 years ago now (time flys)! The carp were still quite young, the 20 being the lake record at the time at 20lb 12oz, and had only been caught once before, and the rest were between 10-15lb. The cats were starting to come though big style. the 33 was an RMC record, but was later caught at 35lb + later that year. I had 5 other 20lb cats I think, which were growing so fast that year. 1 low 20 I had in may was caught around august/sept at 28lb plus, awsome. I fished it from the middle of march to the end may 97, fishing it hard, but it was really tough until middle April due to cold weather, and I think I only had 1 common in my first 9 nights!

Also had tench to 8lb and bream to about the same, although there were doubles in both species for sure! I managed to fluke 1 grass carp off the top as well!

Awsome water, and well worth a go for all species although it really is the cats which are the main target, they are simply incredible!

I am really really looking forward to getting on there in April, I haven't looked forward to fishing a new lake like this in years, I'm like a little kid on Xmas eve.
I am mainly joining for the Cats, but I would also like a Stranger (never had one before), I am also anticipating having a go for the Carp off the top (a method I really enjoy, but haven't had a chance to do for the last couple of years).
But to be totally honest, I'm going to be happy catching whatever picks up my baits, Tench, Bream, Perch et al and having a chance to get away from crowded waters.
As for the planes, I used to work at Heathrow, so probably won't even notice them.

Roll on April.

Mike.

toothless well done mate , there letting me out shortly so i shall be back wink wink , as to the boat pool , lovely lake good size fish all round , i have to say i struggled for carp all i had was a pb tench 8 pound i had more out the cray and mead 1 , my mate had a brace 24+ 19+ one night and a 30+ cat , strange lake fishing wise learn't alot for this year (i hope) be lucky lads you will enjoy it there

Like Mike, I am really looking forward to fishing there. I too, am happy if anything picks up my bait and enjoy catching bream and tench, in fact I'm getting pretty renowned for it, hence 'Pest Contoller'!!...(Thanks, Cash!).
The planes won't keep me awake, I can sleep anywhere, anytime, anyplace...Even though I've fished the Split Lake, I've only set my stall up for cats on a couple of occasions, so I'm looking forward to learning any new methods and tricks involved in fishing for them specifically as the Boat Pool is more cat orientated than carp.
The 'Stranger' will be welcome too....well, at least only once anyway! I'm pleased that the perch run big too....all in all what sounds like a very exciting water.

Looking forward to meeting new friends and the Kingsmead Crazies again.......

Maybe we should re-name you Smarts, the Martini Girl.

But let's face it, with your ugly mug, you need all the beauty sleep you can get

Ouch!

I prefer the nickname 'Noddy' that my Dad used to call me........goes for my angling ability as well....two in one nickname!

I can remember catching the "Stranger" on my first morning on the lake. I didn't know there was one in there and also had never seen one before. Scared the bloody life out of me leaping out of the water.

Regards,
Blank Reg.

ps. Best of luck to the three of you . It's a beautiful lake in the spring and if you can blank out the aeroplane noise you'll love it.

whats the score with livebaits now, as when i was on there these were harder to catch than the cats themselves,
only ever managed a few perch on mini perch fry !!!
these trout that are in there, are they new, as i dont ever remember them ??
are they being used for bait, supper or being put back ????????
would imagine they wont last long if there were only a few hundred put in, Ian, is it something you do each year, stock a few hundred bait fish in to keep the anlgers bait coming in as well as the cats happy ?????????

there is no problem with catching live baits in the boat pool it is rammed with silver fish

Has the boat pool been stocked with more cats of late?

Garth
15-03-2002, 13:41
Don't think so mate, it does not need to be! The cats breed very succesfully in there, and new fish are coming through all the time!

Smarts

Another RMC lake where the cats are breeding really well is Yateley's Split Lake. A fair few generations in there now.....
