Luncheon meat or Chopped ham & pork always a good alternative, but the most versatile must be bread. It can be fished as crust, flake or paste. On the bottom or as a floater, can be flavoured & is highly visible, great for stalking & will sit on top of silt or weed. It's also cheap.

Hi Ian
Up until a couple of years ago at my local lake, I used to fish a bunch of worms during the summer evenings and almost always caught, then as if someone turned of a switch I cound't catch nowt on them? The only problem as well was the amount of small stuff I caught. I think this is why most of us use boilies now, so that we can avoid the smaller species.

Coloured flavoured bread paste works well, it is cheap and you can easily vary the size and colour and even add flavours to the bait on the bank

trout pellets are used as loose feed but are rarely used on the hook. i think if you have enough trout pellet in your swim they become preoccupied on it - much in the same way they do with hemp. they will even move your boilie hookbait aside to get to the pellet.

I've had a couple on both ****les and mussels - wicked winter bait but just as good in summer.

I've had great success with my homemade boilies for all sorts of species using freshwater mussel flavour and on all waters too.

Now, I know you are not going to believe me but I had a low 20 about 4 years ago on a Liquorish allsort, I think it must have been either the anniseed flavour or the colour. Only had one fish on them though. I just goes to show that sometimes the most stupidest bait works.

Ian,
I once took a very well known (old) rod maker to Jones, he had been given some very hard, glazed, round, sweet type biscuits.
They had to be drilled to get the hair in them, within the first hour he had caught a 8lb Bream and then a 12lb Common.
Latter in the day he lost two cats and landed four more Bream and a Tench.
I tried every where to get some more of these sweets but never could.

have you tried marshmellows, The pink ones seem to be better. They sit on the surface great and stay afloat all day. But watch the size of hook though.

In have caught Tench to 5lb and pasties on grape before. Just cut grape in halve and hook through skin. Only works in summer and only use it in margins floatfished. I think they think it is a berry which is a main natural food source. I have never tried it on a big carp water maybe worth a try.
