I will always ask for discount for cash on any item in any field be it a TV or a fishing rod. It was the way I brought up. I didn't like being knocked down when I ran my own business though.

Good post but very similar to a lot of posts by another trader that frequents this forum. Ask yourself this question..... The British Business is greedy, that is why a lot of our products are more expensive than others. If I was running a business I would sell quantity at a lower profit margin, a mate of mine is a tackle trader and decided to knock out a "Well known British" companies products at a discount price. Unfortunately a "Large angling store in Steel City" decided to threaten the company by saying if this carries on we will not sell your products.... sumarising this "is the tackle trade still close shop" If a large distributor shouts do the manufacturers jump? I think they do.... shame though.

Yes i agree with your points, and who am i to stand in the way of a free market economy. Competitive forces will always dictate a price. When supply massively outstrips demand the price can only be driven down.

However, the fact of the matter is our sport needs local tackle shops in order to survive. Sure, with the volume of imports flooding in, prices are bound to be low. But the important thing is that margins should not be eroded away by ill informed or merciless tackle dealers.

To answer your question tony, you simply cannot sell volume. There is clearly too much tackle and not enough anglers. Hence the problems with discounters under cutting discounters and tackle dealers losing money hand over fist literally giving things away. The industry has never been greedy, but when people give things away it just looks like that. And nobody can survive on a massive turnover for ever. Fishing tackle unfortunately, is just another victim of the Far East over production culture.

The problem is one of short termism. The tackle dealer network must be maintained in order for fishing to survive. With no local shop and or source of information, how is anyone young or old going to take up the sport? Where will they buy kit, and gain information? If someone has to drive 50 miles for a pint of maggots or a packet of hooks are they really going to bother to go fishing? And then who are these discounters going to discount to?

Totally agree with the buy cheap thingy
I used to use a really cheap naff mummy bag . Got so cold I had to start taking a duvet with me.So I invested in a heat control mk2 warm as toast now. Woke up last thurs to find the lake frozen solid, hate to think of what the old bag would've been like.
Also the rods I'm using at the moment are of the cheaper type still trying to save up so that I can get some handbuilt Harrisons.
Hope you'll excuse my ignorance but whats the name of your firm Jim?
You get what you pay for in this life' and quality aint cheap.

On my session last week, another angler had a gas powered
heater in his bivvy, cost him £50 from a camping store and he could even cook toast on it, however bit too dodgy for my liking having that on all night.
