View Full Version : Question on HTTP links??
...I know how to create a 'clickable' HTTP link in Outlook, but if your target directory has spaces in the name, this seems to break the link at the space making it useless. Does anybody know how to get round this? I presume there is a control character that can be substituted with the space to fix?
Any takers??

Pretty straight forward mate, replace the spaces with '%20' (without the inverted commers!). It should be remembered that spaces an file names is REALLY bad practice - obviously not something you can control if someones else created the file - but if they are your files simply replace the spaces with underscores.
Good luck

Hello Mate,
Unless the system that recieves the email is on the same network as you, they will not be able to access the file (unless the file is in a publically accessible area on a publically accessable machine!).
So for example you could not send me an email with a link to a file on your C:\ drive.
The only way around it is to include the file as an attachment.
Hope that helps
Paul
....cheers paul, I understand that totally. I'm just talking 'in house' stuff where the recipient would be logged on to and have access to the same network.

generally then the link would be structured like the following
\\machinename\directory\filename
So, for the document sim0n.doc in the simons_documents directory on a machine called fileserver1 the link would be as follows:
\\fileserver1\simons_documents\sim0n.doc
should be created exactly the same as a normal web link.
hope that helps /images/forum/icons/smile.gif
ok, if I type out the directory as you say: \\blah\blah blah\blah blah.doc , in the address bar in explorer this works perfectly. But if typed into the address bar with '%20' subbed into the spaces it does not work...am I being stupid here?
Your help/patience is much appreciated paul.

Hi M8,
Ive just tried it on a file with spaces (and left the spaces in!) and emailed it to myself and it works fine. Are you sure the machine/drive/file are shared with the relevant permissions?

this is for ms outlook
If the Internet address includes spaces, you must enclose the entire address in angle brackets (< >). For example, <file://C:\My Documents\MyFile.doc>
thanks paul, yes permissions are set up etc. It is strange though that when I type the directory into the address bar (with spaces), the file is opened. But if I click the back button in explorer the address is modified to include %20 instead of spaces & subsequently not found?
Thanks Dan as well, I'll try that one later.
thanks again.
Thanks to you both, sussed it now...a mixture of the two worked. Wrapping the directory path in the brackets didn't work for me when spaces were in the path, but substituting the %20 instead of the space cured this, and brackets were not required. I.E. file://C:\My%20Documents\simon.doc
OK then, the next teaser is, how do you hide the path (which is very long in my example), and replace it with a 'clickable' single word hyperlink?? Like we can do using markup in our RMC posts.
[****url=http://www.$$$$$$$$$$$$]Click here[/url****]
do the above and take out the the 2 sets of **** and replace the $$$ with your link

Sim0n,
We are into an Outlook lesson /images/forum/icons/smile.gif
This one is pretty simple though:
Type 'Click Here' in the new message highlight the text, go to the 'Insert' menu select 'Hyperlink'. In the action box that opens select 'file' from the top menu and put the route to your file into the bottom one. Click OK
Job Done :))))
thanks for your suggestion Nerys, but unfortunately that won't work in Outlook.
Thanks once again paul, I think that the reason that I'm having so much trouble is because A: I was initially using a 'remote access' version of outlook which lets me log into my works e-mail from home and is severely restrictive, and B: the version of outlook on my lan (NT) has been chopped down, as I don't get a lot of the options I seem to need, like inserting hyperlinks!
But I suppose, that just makes it too easy! I think that I can create what I need in MS Word and import to Outlook though, so I'll try that.
Cheers.
.....sussed it....to get the hyperlink options from the pull down menus, HTML needs to be selected from the Format pull down, then the name of your hyperlink can be typed, highlit, then made into a hyperlink using the menu options as Dan described above...
