Anyone else noticed the server has slowed down quite considerably? I ask as I don't want to groan on about it if it's my end.........

Anyone else getting page not found (error 404) at all?

tony, i dont think "page not found" has anything to do with the servers performance, maybe you are having network problems?!?!?

The site is slower and I have had the page not found once

Billy,
I must admit it is a bit slower - I havent had any 404's but if you do a trace the last 4 hops (down to Designer Servers) are not individually diabolical but do appear to preent a bit of a slow response.

Gents,

A couple of questions so I can get this sorted:

1). Is the site as a whole slower, or just the forum?
2). Are you only getting 404's on the Forum Tony, or the entire site?
3). When you get the 404's (missing page) errors, are you receiving the RMC Angling page that tells you you have requested a pages that may have been moved or is missing?

Takedown - can you email me a copy of your Traceroute please?

I think we may have to start running the forum under mod_perl...

Cheers,

Bill.

The site seems to be slower loading at first Billy and the forum is the only place that takes time to load.My missing page came from the for sale board

re: Ian. Exactly the same problem as you, though no 404s. Especially frustrating as I've been haunting the site quite a lot whilst nursing a fishing induced back problem.

Billy,

fo me the site is slightly slower and the forum is running no more than 10% of the speed it was before, it used to be instant now I am waiting up to a minute for pages to load....

As for the 404's had quite a few of them but when clicking on back and then reloading the page it is fine, this may be down to me having broadband access... as for now it is almost impossible to navigate as it has slowed right down to almost a stop.

This reply so far has taken me 3 minutes to get to this stage.

This all started when you adopted the new server.

No 404's but the site is perceptibly slower. I have recently bought a new machine, and access had been super fast, now it is much slower, especially when using the forum.

Looks like billy has put the 10p in the meter.... at present back to normal speed

Hi Gents,

The server now seems to be running at the speed it should. Anymore problems let me know.

I'll still look into your 404 problems Tony.

Bill.

Billy,

Matey, this server is not as good as the last one, looks like the specifications are not as expected. The speed is variable from fast to stop still.

Anything you can do?

Billyo
23-01-2002, 22:29
Hi Tony,

The server spec. is defenitely better than before mate, but there are still a few things that need "tweeking" to get it up to ow it should be running!

We're be sorting these out one by one...

ATB,

Bill.

Its taken me since 9.15am till now (13.36) to get on the site today.

I've been getting 403 messages, telling me I do not have permission to access the site, 404 messages telling me the site is down and messages telling me the server cannot be found.

Its also just taken me 5 minutes to get from the input index page to this box to type a message

What is going on????????

This is the information provided to me by the company we lease the server from:

>>
There was a serious network problem earlier this morning which caused the server to be inaccessible. When this was resolved, network filesystem inode caching issues caused the site to respond unexpectedly.

Further problems arose due to catastrophic hardware failure across several servers. Engineers then replaced several discs from HP spares and this hardware also failed!

An engineer from HP will be at the server facility tomorrow, during which there may be brief periods of downtime. Further news will be posted as soon as we receive it.
<<

Our apologies for any inconvenience caused, and you can be assured that we are looking into other hosting option to ensure the recent downtime experienced does not happen in the future.

Billy.....

As you have explained this server has better bandwidth etc... isn't better to have reliability? The last server was excellent as far as I am concerned and this one is still down on speed in comparison to the last?

I am still having difficulties accessing the pages on occasions with page not found.

Billyo
28-01-2002, 16:56
totally agree about the reliability Tony, which is why we're looking into our options.... Ian is being kept informed and we should have more info available shortly.

Having just put the phone down from someone who knows their stuff, I am adviced that it is more than likely to be a configuration problem with the server, due to the newness. Still, this doesn't get around the fact that it should be running without the number problems we're experiencing!

When you get the 404's (page not found) are you only getting these on the forum or the entire website??? If on the entire site, do you get the RMC page saying you have requested a missing or moved page, oir just a blank page?

Billy,

if its any help, I copy/pasted the pages earlier,

this was one of the messages;

"Cannot find server or DNS Error
Internet Explorer"

Then this;

"403
Forbidden
You don't have permission to access / on this server. "

Then this;

"Apache/1.3.20 Server at www.rmcangling.co.uk Port 80

The page cannot be found
The page you are looking for might have been removed, had its name changed, or is temporarily unavailable.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please try the following:

If you typed the page address in the Address bar, make sure that it is spelled correctly.

Open the www.rmcangling.co.uk home page, and then look for links to the information you want.
Click the Back button to try another link.
Click Search to look for information on the Internet.

HTTP 404 - File not found
Internet Explorer "

I was trying both the site home page, and the links to different sections of the site that I have in my favorites section. It didn't seem to make a difference in which error message I got for which bit of the site I was trying.

I don't know if thats any use but...

Billyo

Thanks Nerys, but it was a hardware problem, which wouldn't have returned errors to your browser that could help us fix it. Most of these errors are Internet Explorer "guessing" at what the probelm is, but basically telling you the site is unavailable.

We are told the problem is a faulty batch of SCA backplanes. The reason why this has affected us so badly is because all servers came from the same batch and upon power cycling this morning, they failed in exactly the same way. A HP engineer will be supplying replacement backplanes tomorrow morning, which will be installed and the repaired servers brought back online.

ATB,

Bill.

So Billy, is this a last chance thing with this server? If this problem keeps on occuring will you stick with it or go elsewhere? Maybe this question is unanswerable on open forum, if so PM me?????

DanCleary

Billyo, ever thought of using a Big IP solution, at least the customers shouldn't get '404''s if there a problem?
only way then is if there's a power failure at hosting centre of the feed into the hosting environment wen't down, which as you know for bith cases is very rare.

Billyo

The HP engineer is now on-site with replacement hardware. Watch this space for further information.

Over the next couple of hours, brief periods of downtime lasting no more than 15 minutes at a time, may be experienced as replacement hardware is installed on the server.

Sorry for any inconvenience caused.
