View Full Version : Why do river carp fight harder ?
Hi All,
I had a few hours on a local stretch of the kennet earlier today and managed to bank a 16lb 40z mirror carp. It was in beautiful condition and put up a fight like I've never had before !!!
I just wondered what people thought made them fight so hard ?
Bill.

Are you taking the P*** billy. The Avon is now unfishable due to all the bait I threw in all the way back to Ringwood
I would guess that their physique was certainly a factor...river carp generally have a longer more streamlined body i.e. no gut like lake fish...and generally they have to swim more against the current to avoid being swept downstream, so their muscles maybe more toned and have more stamina? Also they have the added advantage of using the current in the fight against us..
A bit like me then....

It's cos theyve got much bigger tales Billy. LOL
Blimey Bill, we must be the lucky ones. I was feeder fishing on the relief channel this afternoon using bloody maggots and took a nice 14lb carp, absolutely scale perfect common. I was only after the chub as well.... I will send you the photo's tomorrow mate /images/forum/icons/smile.gif

Blimey doesnt that Simon geezer take all this river carping stuff seriously. heh heh
Great fish Billy, Don't they Go....
I managed a 16+ from the Pats that in all honesty made barbel seem tame.
As Ian knows I have also failed to tame a couple of 20's that just carried on down..
How can people fish for those overweight goldfish in ponds when there are BIG river carp waiting in the Thames for some boilies is beyond me.
Great catch, I have forgotten what a fish looks like after 4 blanks!
I want to be a river carp, my girl would probably appreciate me more /images/forum/icons/laugh.gif

...better step up to my 50lb spiderwire then......
Blimey Graham... you too !!! What time did you catch it **today** ?
Bill.
Because I am little Neil I know a minnow looks big to me but this was a beauty, it did say that it see you on the relief last week but said it preferred blondes /images/forum/icons/laugh.gif and said your bait was dodgy so it give it a miss like /images/forum/icons/smile.gif

The severn is quite a pacey river. So is the Hants Avon. The Thames can go abit too.
....would you say in general though Neil, as I'm only going from pics that I've seen, not from any personal experience...the majority of river carp have a sleek looking wildie type frame?

Not at all, most rivers have just about every size and shape of carp you can imagine in them.Perhaps you only catch the skinny ones Simon.
The original Thames carp are all plump so I have seen

Not one that was dumped in at the Mole Estuary Neil

I think it is also because they tend to be either uncaught or rarely caught therefore more "scared" when they are hooked, most amazing fight I have seen was with one of my mates on the tidal when the tide was falling its "very" fast flowing we landed it about 150 yds downstream.
