The navigation has been throwing up some big carp for the last couple of years and is mostly untapped potential. I've seen some cracking tench and carp above Broxborne and hardly anyone fishing there, ever!

There's undiscovered treasure in them there canals http://www.rmcangling.co.uk/forum/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Carpycris,

The Fish you are refuring too, comes from the Fishers Green Relief Channel.

This is a thread for the Lea Navigation and fish caught or seen in the canal.

I was down at Carthagena on Monday, not a lot happening on the chubby front but the bream were going bonkers on fry. At first I thought it was perch ripping into the fry shoal but one or two of them came a full body leangth out of the water in their excitement. I considered that they may have been just rolling through the fry and scaring them but the longe it went on the more obvious it became that they wre actually attcking them as skillfully as any fulltime preditor. I have actually seen this once before and shows how seasonal the fishes diet can be.

zinga, I was also there on Monday Morning--- early and the Bream were going mad then.

The weirpool and river hold many over 10lbs, not bad for River fish, there were also some very nice Carp Showing.

Unfortunately the Species I was after nid not put in an appearence, but I had a Jack and a Perch.

I hear the Crays are in full swing again, I told that Redtail to get some artificial Boilies ?

Ho ho

Fields Weir area, Crayfish a Nightmare, had a few Chub and lots of small Perch.

Impossible to keep any bait in the water for more that 5 minutes-- roll on the COLD weather ?

excuse my stupidity but where is the lea navigation?

Redtail
26-09-2005, 01:28
It's the "canalised" parts of the Lea that the boats can use. Sometimes seperate from the old river, some parts are the old river. Follow the Lea on any map and they should be marked. i.e. from Carthagena Weir down to Kings Weir (then the nav splits off to run parallel to Fishers Green section).

11.8 Common and 4.12 Chub tonight.

I think it's Mick, Bob! But well done to him, he's been there for weeks catching not much but Bream, but he's also had a PB 5.12 Chub, too.

Good for him and his tenacity! http://www.cemexangling.co.uk/forum/images/graemlins/wink.gif

The Waltham Abbey stretch of the Navigation has produced some very Good Pike in recent Weeks.

Paternostered Deadbaits keeing the Bait of the Bottom, can be a Good method of avoiding the Crayfish.

I would give that a try.

Ive recently been fishing fieldes weir and had some success with pike, i was speaking to someone down there and they said that the Lea was open in the closed season from windmill lane in cheshunt towards waltham abbey and tottenham etc, can anyone clear up if this is true or not and if so why is it open from there onwards, is there a reason for this? Why not open it from broxbourne or where ever why just from windmill lane??? Any one clear this up for me???
Thanks

Yes, The person you spoke to is correct. The lea nav from below aquaduct lock is a canal, not a river in the true sense . So it is open throughout the river close season. I fish at Dunlops during the close season and have had some very good results. give it a try.

Dunlops bend as it is known to those of us who have fished there for years is at waltham cross, at the bottom of Lea road, Jewsons the building suppliers yard is on the corner and the pub called The Old English Gentleman is on the bridge over the canal. The pike fishing is quite good, and double figure fish do turn up quite often. I'm not sure as to the legal right to fish for pike after the close of the river season and it is possible that the local bylaws (british waterways or whoever is responsible for the canal) my dictate that the pike fishing ends in march. I could be completely wrong but it's worth finding out first. As for the other species, the tench and carp fishing can be good with some good bream, sadly the roach that made Dunlops famous no longer show as they once did.
