hi guys, i have been thinking about gettin harrison ballistas or chimeras, has any 1 seen them to tell me what they r like and also who would be the best person to get them custom built through?? cheers http://www.rmcangling.co.uk/forum/images/graemlins/confused.gif
i'm biased but use the chimera 3.5 built by mark tunley http://www.rmcangling.co.uk/forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif
had infinities, amorphous etc etc and would say imo that these are my best rods ever - will chuck 170+ in the right hands and still play fish under the rod tip on braid
well pleased

yer cheers im on mark tunleys website now an it all seems fantastik, ill shall be ringing him later!! what testcurves do you think are the most effective for medium-large gravel pits on both rods--- your answers please!! http://www.rmcangling.co.uk/forum/images/graemlins/smirk.gif http://www.rmcangling.co.uk/forum/images/graemlins/smirk.gif http://www.rmcangling.co.uk/forum/images/graemlins/confused.gif http://www.rmcangling.co.uk/forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif
ask mark - but for a multi range rod that plays fish under the rod tip then 3.5's are quite good

I agree with JetSki Mark Tunley Chimera rods are without doubt brilliant rods, they cast over horizon but are good under foot, and I have had everything from NG's to Pursuits and all in between

i Have got 3 x ballista Slims from Johnson ross had them for just over 1 year, quality build they are outstanding when playing fish and go right over !
one q about blanks in general - do all, say, 3lb Chimera blanks have the same action? Sorry for being a numpty - I only ask as I've recently got hold of a pair of brand new custome built jobbies (3lb Chimeras, obviously), and they seem a bit stiff in the tip. They weren't built by Tunley or Buss....some other geezer at Foster's of Birmingham called Bob, I think.
any clues? http://www.cemexangling.co.uk/forum/images/graemlins/confused.gif
Bobs an excellent builder at about 75% of the price of the more 'fashionable' builders and, call me a numpty if Im wrong but, if the rods are custom, what is the difference in the build no matter who makes em?
Not sure about blanks differing though I suspect I may have experienced just that with rods I have owned too. I think the following can affect the action, and dont forget the weight of the component parts used also will have an effect:
double leg eyes can stiffen the rod, though maybe insignificantly.
building on the spine or not can affect the stiffness
age can loosen rods
thanks ripper, thats quite reassuring to hear, as I had started to get a tiny bit concerned.
I did ask another rod builder about the single leg/double leg thing, and he said it was myth, and that the action should be the same whichever were used.
Take it from me if you get the balistas and want to use them for distance work/ method fishing/ heavy pva work... you`ll be buying new rods in a few years.
They loose their backbone and get softer with age.
No idea on the Chimeras though, never owned any of them.
I think all rods lose thier 'steel' after a while don't they? It's the resin degenerating innit?

I think it's fairly safe to say if you want to launch a lead a long way or use PVA bags/method then the ballistas woun't be up to the job. The Chimeras seem to get good reviews for that sort of fishing but I've not used them so I can't comment. I've had Ballistas for 5 years now and wouldn't swap them for any rod on the market today. For the fishing I do, which is mostly on fairly small waters, they are ideal and I can still put a lead a reasonable distance with them (110 yards) if I really need to. Some of my mates have rods which cost twice as much as my ballistas yet they all say they prefer mine.

I agree with Breamking, I have had a set of 2 3/4 ballistas for about 10 years now and cannot fault them.
Happy using them for tench and bream, but still got enough backbone when you need it. Have landed cats to 40+ with no problems at all.
Would not swap them for any other rod.
