I've started a new thread for the next fish-in which will be at St. Patricks Stream.

Can we have a few suggestions for dates from people please ? We are looking at the end of Feb/beginning of March...

Barbel/Chub will be the intended species (per usual), but people fishing for roach/bream/etc are more than welcome to come along.

If you are intersted in joining us, reply to this message below.

GrahamE/Ian, can we have some tips from you on tactics/baits please ?

Bill.

Pencil me in billy,I'll keep an eye on the posts and confirm when a date is known.
no joy at the green yet,but I've been trickling in a bit of bait here and there for the past couple weeks so who knows,I also know where Paul has been baiting so I may do a sneaky one soon.
All the best

Most venues will have quality roach in, I would try a small river, St. Pats holds some quality Roach & so does the upper Thames. Hemp & Tares or maple are a killer in the summer. If you can get on a wier silk weed is a killer. If you want other species such as chub & barbel try caster over hemp. Spruce up your reflexes as you will need them. If the river is heavy with flood water, flake in the margins or bread punch. For the lakes flake takes some beating as long as you can get through the skimmers and crucians.

Hi Tony,

Scorpio is the Roach man of the forum I think (check out his Profile)... but heres my input anyway....

I would fish the Hants Avon, and Upper Kennet for roach, but winter time - not summer. These rivers may be a little too far for where you are based... how far is the Wensum from you ? There are a few spots up there that turn up a few good fish (or used to).
Feed liquidised bread and fish flake on the hook, as this seems to account for the better fish.

Good luck.

Bill.

Billy, I will email you with some tips and swims rather than post it.
The water is CRAX at the moment but should be ok Mid feb on for some big ones given a fair chance. I will also look in my book to make sure no matches planned TDFC if you are doing Sunday. I can't make weekends!

It is no good for quality roach but will be ok for barbus/chub/slimies and maybe a 20 carp!

I had some grat Roach fishing from there about 4 years ago Graham, has it changed?

Hi Graham i hope you are coming with us again
hopefully it will be alot better we might have some land around us lol

GrahamE
31-01-2001, 20:26
There might be one fish nudging 1 1/2 lb per year caught.
there are a few swims that hold them but a fish over 8oz is good. The best I have ever seen is a 1.6 I caught 2 years ago on tares. (which are very succesful in summer for barbel!)
The match boys rarely catch more than 2/3 per 20 anglers.

scorpio
31-01-2001, 21:08
That surprises me to say the least Graham, I had some excellent chub, 6 roach, biggest 1.10.0 all over a pound and a barbel at St. Pats in one day, all caught on floatfished elderberries over hemp in the swim on the bend on the reed bed. Maybe I just got lucky that day. I will take your word for it and go for the other species. I have had some reasonable Bream from there on the feeder as well in the autumn months.

31-01-2001, 21:24
Tony,

Aren't you going to try it for the barbel ?

What does everyone think of doing this on either Sat 24th Feb or Sat 10th March ?

31-01-2001, 21:28
How big do the chub go in St. Pats? I will probably try if for the Barbel but wont know my approach till I know the conditions. I am after catching a 6lb+ chub this year /images/forum/icons/smile.gif

Tony

Billyo
31-01-2001, 21:34
Neil,

Are you thinking of doing the night ?

BTW - there is a ban on electronic bite alarms when fishing St. Pats /images/forum/icons/smile.gif

Bill.

GrahamE
31-01-2001, 22:03
You did have an excellent day, and that would have been the first swim I suggested that is known to hold roach!
The chub average 3 1/2lb / bestTwyford Club is about 5.13 But I know bigger your section and I know MR Welch had one last year(or this) over 6lb.
This year the chub are not as numerous as in previous years and apart from 1/2 swims a couple is good. The plus side is there are more barbel showing and they average 7+
Best bream TWyford Club 8.10 which is fun in the faster water( for 2 minutes)

I was in fact fishing it for the Roach, a lovely glide through there, I am quite contented to know my watercraft skills are still up to scratch /images/forum/icons/smile.gif I will go for the Barbel if I make it down there. Any special baits apart from the obvious traditional Barbel baits Graham?

Billyo, thanks for organising the Tyringham fish-in enjoyed the wading, the 24th sounds good to me but I will probably need a guest ticket.

I will send some views to Billy to share, might be an idea if Ian did same. Lot, as always depends on the colour/flow/temp!
Ian, views on roach in the Pats? Looks ideal but if 20 went targetting roach, I would be very suprised if more than 2 caught one from different swims and even more suprised if one over the pound was caught.
Early and late in season (cleaning and looking to pair up) are be better than mid season but still not more than above.

GrahamE
01-02-2001, 21:16
Ian, told you before, very pleased to arrange a ticket, needs to be with a member. I am taking 2 guests on the 15th Feb/and any other wed/thur pleased to invite you. let me know.
Yes the downstream end has generally the bigger fish, and as mentioned before from the Thames and also more flow because the Borough Marsh runs in increasing the flow by 1/3. The 15.1 barbel is not the biggest!
To give you a taste my indv (best) day was 5 fish, 13.1 plus 11.6 plus 3 more...but I did fish for 4 hours that day.
Best total 11 fish.
There are some swims on your stretch that can produce 6/6 barbel / chub and I know where an estimated(mine) 7lb chub lays.
BUT...we do need a change in this bloody awful weather!

Bill. I've arranged a fishin on the Severn at Kempsey over the weekend 24/25 Feb 30 anglers going incl Peter Falloon.
Steve Pope and |Fred Crouch (sorry to namedrop!!)are attending and
we are to have a raffle in
Memory of Gordon Scott(

mem
orial bench arranged)The prizes in the raffle
add up to about 2000.00 so I had better

go now!
We still have a few places see http://www.Anglersnet.co.uk/ Kempsey fishin. (http://www.Anglersnet.co.uk/)
So you see I have a pretty good excuse.
I really would like to get down to meet you all again, so any chance of changing date would be great, at least I could come and take the micky if only for an hour or so!!!.
Ian, just email me if you can get a wed/thur free but not 15thFeb as 2 guests incl Ppeter Falloon planned.
I will as advised do my best to give some insights to Billy.
Enjoy.

System playing up sorry bout the text.

Hi Tony,

The 24th seems to conflict with GrahmE's Kempsey fish-in, in aid of Gordon Scott !

I won't be going to Kempsey but I know a couple of others are, so maybe we should change the date ?

Also, I'm not sure how many guest permits will be available for this stretch - Paulm needs 4 as well as FGRW needing one...

The Ouse was a couple of miles of bank that doesn't get fished much and St. Pats gets pretty busy on a mile and a bit of river... !

I'll find out how many permits will be available.

Bill.

From a purely selfish point of view. It would be great if you could look at another date/ following week? At least I could get down sometime during the day and meet you all.
Just a reminder. Kempsey will take any stragglers. BUT if you can't make it look at the Prizes in the raffle!
Go to www. Anglersnet.co.uk and click on Kempsey fishin on the link.

I'd love to come Tony, but I'm up to my neck in work, skint and if I have got any money to spare, I want to try and get along to a HOC dinner in aid of Second Chance...

As for the dates how about we move it to the following week which is... errr... 3rd March ?

Ian has said that we're OK for guest permits too... !

So far we have the following names:

CB1 (Gary)
CB2 (Brian)
FGRW (Richard)
Paulm
Sallers (??)
Scorpio
Clive (?)
BobP (?)
Billyo

Other possibles are Rivercarper and IanWelch - are you coming guys ?

Anyone else wanting to come along, please add your name below. Those who do not have a St. Pats permit will have to pay £4.00 for a guest permit.

Cheers,

Bill.
