Folks - can you help me please by answering this dumb question. On a number of posts here I have seen an expression "lol" used as in "That was a colossal chub lol"

Is it an abbreviation or acronym and what does it stand for ?

Basically it means 'laugh out loud' or 'lots of laughs' etc.
