Can anyone put me straight on the Crucian carp/goldfish hybrid discussion.....I seem to remember a recent debate on the subject and a record crucian submission was refused and deemed to be a goldie cross..... is there a way of telling the difference?....and can you tell from a photo?
I caught a very nice one recently which I may put in the press, but I don't want to make a pratt of myself....any help appreciated...

Simon,

How to tell the difference between Crucians and Goldfish

As with all such keys, it is assumed you have one of each in front of you!

C = Crucian, and GF = Goldfish.....hmmm...obviously ;-)

Lateral line scales. C 32-34, Often incomplete, usually fades towards the tail. GF 27-29, continuous.

Dorsal fin outline. C convex, GF concave/straight

Anal fin spine. C lightly serrated, GF strongly serrated

Gill rakers on first gill arch. C 21-32, GF 38-43

Caudal fin. C. Blunt with shallow fork, GF Deeply forked, lobes sometimes
elongate.

Hope this helps,
Paul

I used to fish a farm reservroir which contained crucians with long fins, were these really fancy goldfish?

Thanks PaulG, I have blown up the pic of my crucian and can see at least 32 lateral line scales....so I suppose I have the real thing.....it would be a shame to dissect it to see it's gut lining Ian!
Thanks once again.

I always thought Goldfish and Crucians were the same species but variants like Mirror, common & leather carp.... you learn something every day here.

Sorry Ian, it wasn't unfortunately a Yately or RMC venue fish.
It was a Surrey club water.

....not from a Farnham water either....but from a water in the furthest southern reaches of Surrey....nearly Sussex.

Would the place begin with a letter "P" by any chance because I had some giant crucians from there.

...well it seems no congratulations due....even though I thought I'd made sure I had a true Crucian (i.e. 32+ lateral line scales), it would seem that the Anglers mail have rejected it as a brown Goldfish??
..........maybe I should cut the next one open!? /images/forum/icons/crazy.gif

Having not seen the picture I can't add any comment. Whats the record for a brown Goldfish then ? Whatever it is, as it's a species that doesn't grow to massive proportions, your capture is still a nice fish.
