Anyone fished The Chelmer this year ?

Was it any good - looking to try it once Autumn sets in, just wondered what sort of fish it holds and to what size - good methods to use etc ?

Hi Charlie

I fished the Chelmer at Hoe Mill Lock last week and had two small chub, still very clear and few signs of fish moving. Few people caught on the day. Seems to need some rain and colour - also there are bleedin nettles everywhere!

if you want an easy access easy fishing section with carp to upper doubles go up to blasford hill and talk to cris the owner. hell put u right on the fish.
home mill supposedly holds some year round but seems more productive in the winter.
try the little marina near the waterfront restaurant that always holds em to about 23lb

Hoe Mill.
Back stream was pushing through strong. Well up & coloured following the heavy overnight rain.
Fished a 2 hour session. Caught 1 Chubb at 3/4 lb, on small piece of cheese paste.

Chatting to some guys who were fishing opposite the canoe club at the weekend.
They were after pike and had 3 to double figures.
Seen plenty of carp in the water but only to about low double.

Had 8 pike to about 6lb and lost 4 or 5 all on spinners over 3 3hour sessions. Lost one better fish. nothing big but good sport.
All from the Muddy waters streach!!
Over run with Jacks, one did have big old bite marks on.

visited the Chelmer on 13/11/04 in Chelmsford
level was slightly above normal, but had been flushed out heavily over the few days before. Still very coloured. Bank sides have been scoured away by flood water, most reed beds flattened and alot of the weed growth has now gone.

Did see some evidence average sized perch feeding at dusk.
Only managed to catch one small roach.

Two friends of mine fished the Springfield stretch till late last night. (25/11) They caught 5 Chub, 3 being above 5 lb. Several Roach all over 3/4 lb.
(Or that's what they're telling me)

They're in there, it's just finding them

Been fishing the springfeild basin of late. Had quite a few pike to upper single on small live baits and a number of Perch to 2lb.
Best day i had i managed 7 jacks and 7 perch in four hours. I had the same pike twice in consecutive casts!!

I've heard rumers of 30lb pike coming from the automatic weir and of a 32lb carp coming from the muddy waters streach. Rumers to be taken with a pinch of salt me thinks

Putney,

I was looking to fish the Chelmer as soon as I can and would really appreciate it if you would give me directions (from Chelmsford town Centre) to the two stretches you mentioned, 'Springfield Basin' and 'Muddy Waters', they both sound great for pike, perch etc.
PM me if you'd prefer. Much appreciated.
Regards
Al.

The section above the automatic weir, opposite the canoe club has produced a pike of 21lb. Witnessed by me.
I was very upset 'cos I didn't catch it.

Who controls that stretch along there Alan and towards the bridge from the Army & Navy, or is it day ticket?
Do you know where 'Muddy Waters' is??
Thanks & Regards
Al.

rumours of a 32lb carp are true but not from anywhere near muddy waters. try about 7 miles away. lol. bigger are rumoured to exist with some substance to the claims but not sure where abouts. rivers looking better by the day. cant wait till june 16th. get out after them river beasts. blasford hill stretch holds some fantastic wildies.

Had a look at a stretch near sanford mill - only saw one beat up looking chub. Water is relatively clear with quite a bit of weed growth. RIver just looks dead - unless i'm looking in all the wrong spots!!

I'd say all streaches of the chelmer had carp, some more than others and some bigger than others.
I had a 13lb Common from near muddy waters last week.
Your best bet is to just keep going and keep looking. No ones going to give their favorite little spots away.

Look of bridges, you'll be surprised what you see!!

ill give one away but its not my favourite coz its such a [censored] location. the town cenetr under the burger king bridge. has to be fished from a secret hidey hole or a boat though and you have to compete with OAP's single mums, lots and lots of chavs and everything else that goes with sitting in a boat in a tiny river in a town center dressed like a nutter and holding a long stick chasing after a fish.
river looks pretty poor all along at the moment. compared to the last few seasons it just looks dead. had a few small ones though
