What with all the happenings with ourselves, the USA and Afghanistan, what repurcussions do you think we will see in the future, considering the fact that the majority of wars we have been involved with recently have been materialistic (over oil, land or money) but this time we are entering a religious war.
Do you think we are doing the right thing or not, what are your views??
This reminds me,Mike.........A dead Afgan has been found in Michael Barrymore's swimming pool..........Police think it's a suicide bummer....

Mike,
I think Blair et al have tried to make it quite clear that this is not a religious war. We are not fighting Islam we are fighting terrorism. If we start saying we are calling for jihad against Islam then we lose all of the Arab support for the coalition. Speak to any moderate muslims and they are shocked at what happened on Sept 11th and also horrified at the interpetation of the Koran that Bin Laden spouts. So we need these people on our side. This certainly aint a crusade.
And yes we are doing the right thing. If we did nothing then the 6000 lives lost when the WTC got hit would have been lost in vain, and we would all be sitting waiting for the next outrage.
What wil the repercusions be? I am sure that this period of uncertainty will continue, air travel has already been hit, and this will have a knock-on effect into the supporting areas everything from plane making to holidays. This will then fuel the economic slowdown that we are experiencing and maybe trigger a full blown recession. Oil prices may jump around a bit, but as there is no direct involvement in this conflict by any OPEC countries I suspect that overall they will remain flat. Peoples confidence has been struck a mighty blow and it will take time to recover from that. The one good thing is that, certainly in the UK people are still spending, and this would keep recession at bay.
Thats how I see it anyway. I'm off now and will pick up what looks like an interesting thread next week.
The only effect it has had on me is I am waiting every day to see if i get blown up as I drive trains into London... it is very scarey and I dissagree with our countries involvement....
Where were the yanks at the beginning of the 2nd world war, where were the yanks during the Falklands, Bush said he and the American people will retaliate on those people harbouring and financing terrorism.... is he going to retaliate on his own people who have been funding the IRA.... I think not.... we are just puppets...... do gooders getting a brown nose from the Americans..... hypocritical and un-necessary... the only people to gain from all this will be the Isralies.
Sorry to get political but it is very true...
You should worry Tony... I work on the 23rd floor of Canary Wharf Tower... I don't really fancy some terrorist chappie trying to ram a 737 up my (CENSORED)

No disrepect Mike and to all, whilst you may have some valid points, is it best we stick to angling debates & issues.
We have enough obscure views on angling topics without taking on world issues as well.
