View Full Version : Crayfish in the Craypool...
Ian,
Just wondering if the Craypool was actually netted this year to try to reduce the numbers of Crayfish, I noticed a sign up earlier in the year saying so, but I wondered how this went, or if it has been ongong all year? And has it made a difference?
Si,
there was a potting attempt, and I do mean attempt which was wholey unsuccessful. About a dozen in 24 hours got caught. They really were eating anything and everything but then they always do. Are you coming back?
Eric.

I havent had any problems with crayfish before but you could try an ingredient I was reading about called Jawbreaker. It is a hook bait hardener that apparently is designed for this purpose. I think you can get it from Carp Co.
simon after 3 times shutting the lake spring time an attempt was made as eric says about 6 where caught ,they where as they always have been from late spring to late sept a real pain ,hope to see you somtime either eillis or mead ,be lucky mate
andy ,the main problem with the crays are they eat food buy draging it back to their home if they can .back leads, tubing ,putty eny thing they can , tried jaw breaker lasted 6 hours , tigers get chomped ,hook links damaged so 20lb amnesia breakes at 5lb , i recon 50 percent of time you fish with no bait if you fished all year ,some nights 2 hours and your done , good luck on the mead ill see you spring time ,im the one that looks like a paint chart
Listen guys, a great way of getting crayfish from a lake is every angler try to catch them, I had 20 once in 2 hours at my trout fishery I fish and sold them. If every angler who fishes the water took the time to place a net in the water with some meat in it it wouldn't take long for the crayfish long to lower in numbers...., good fun when the fish aint biting. /images/forum/icons/smile.gif if there is anywhere else to locate them all the better, why don't RMC supply a dustbin or sommat at the lake and people put the crayfish in it. Then relocate them to a river or something.

Tony I don't want the bloody things eating my boilies in the rivers either.
hmmm.....maybe RMC would like to employ me as a Crayfish catcher.....While fishing the Beach swim the year b4 last, just as it got dark I threw a handfull of pidgeon conditioner into the margin in front of me....waited 5 mins, then dragged my 42" landing net over the top....three attempts at this & 15 mins later I had 50 of the little ******s! Sizes ranging from 1" to 8", these all went into a bucket, then back to my mates house for him to eat....yuk!
Are the catfish still alive in there?....I never saw any while there....
I saw 6 kittens introduced to a 3 acre lake at Woking with a Cray problem.....6 months later the Crays were gone....its a shame a few couldn't be sexed and introduced...temporarily?

Bless em they sorted out Sandersons.Bit bigger than kittens now Simon.
Yes Neil....did the trick though didn't it?!
They've broken the 30 barrier now, haven't they?
..oh yes Eric...I'll try to get back there soon.
And by the way, are you the same Eric that would have fished the Cray about 5 years ago? If you are you will remember maybe, a friend of mine called Stuart Anderson....awesome angler....nine fish from the Cray in one year!!!
Be lucky.

A mate of mine told me that sometimes he uses flavoured beads as hook baits only obviously. These beads are porus and so they absorb the flavour nicely. I suddenly thought that these may well help with the crayfish problem?
yes, you can use beads, plastic balls and wooden balls (like the car air fresheners), soaked in flavours...the problem I found down the Cray was that they seemed to get the 'hump' with these rigs & still drag the hook baits around, and tie the rigs in knots etc!
...don't keep us in suspense Ian.....you are getting like Chris Tarrant! Any snippets?
...WOW.....We are not worthy! Well done Alan!
alan has again proved that he is one of the very best carp anglers around ,well done alan see you soon mate , long fish 35+ is it growing lets hope so

keeping it british.
fantastic angling, alan welch! what a great piece of writing!
something which i have said in the past - you don't need to spend a fortune on hooks, super specialists (at least two inches in - so the women tell me!) do the business! the long one - awesome winter colours! i am sooooo tempted by this water, you wouldn't believe...! (easy eric, this doesn't mean you will have someone to curl up with on those cold and lonely nights!)
great angling,
bazza
Eric,
Stuart is now in New Zealand, with his wife...sea fishing last I heard. Did you know that he had 6 takes in one day from the Cray!...now that doesn't happen very often, does it!!
Another top class angler!
.....anyway one of my questions was lost by the Wayside..... has anyone ever caught or seen any of the Catfish that are supposed to be in the Cray?
I have heard a couple of 'fishy stories' from anglers there who have been 'done' by an unstoppable beast or '"my size four was straightened", this could maybe be an explanation?
