Hi there guys,
Just trying to get my thoughts together on what your general thoughts are on the whole shelf life thing. I'm not trying to single any company out but what do you think of what's out there already and what would you like to see different in the future if anything. Are there many of you out there for example who cannot get access to a freezer? Is there anything that could be done to help you? That kind of thing

lol I'll go for it here. I only have the little bit at the top of my fridge for my boilies and sometimes this can cause a bit of a stir with my girlfriend. But saying that i still am not sure about the ingredients that go into the making of a shelf life boilie. I have heard that in some they use a huge amount of sugar or something natural that does have the effect of creating shelf life boilies but I have also heard that there are other ingreduients that are not so natural.
It would obviously help my fishing a lot if I used shelf lifes as I waste quite a lot of bait by binning it when it goes off too quick. But as I am not sure about the others I dont use them. Do you use shelf lifes Jim? Or do you prefer freezer boilies?

Hi ed
Sorry to be a pain but I don't want to go into the whole techy side of it at the moment but let's put it this way I have a few ideas! Yes I have used our own readymades but to explain about them I guess would be advertising. In short, I know ours are ok although if I'm prebaiting an unknown quantity I like to know the bait is breaking down relatively quickly so I use frozen. Otherwise I'm quite happy to use our process.
BLATANT PUN - Our bait doesn't sit around long enough on the bottom to worry about it!

lol fair enough. I have played around with air drying bait though. This seems to work fine as long as you keep them totally dry. Oh and I know your bait is obviously a good one as everyone seems to praise the heck out of it so fair play to you.
I just have the problem of keeping bait as I have a flat and no freezer so I have to think of other things. In your post you mentioned about shelf lifes so thats why I answered cos i am interested. I do know a little about bait lol but we wont go into that either on here. So I guess I will have to stick to pellets and particles for a while longer. Tell you what though it isnt half difficult to air dry any quantity of bait when you live in a flat with three kiddies on your own. They try to play with everything lol
All the best, Andy

You try doing it with a dog in the house. Many a time I've come down in the morning to find he's eaten the lot.

lol fair point Neil. My cats arent any better apart from that dog of yours could eat a lot more I reckon.
...in my humble opinion, it all comes down to convenience. I have used readymades for years, yes their breakdown rate is slow, and do get frowned upon by the purists, but I'm not aware of any harm they cause to fish, and I have never felt that I was being outfished by 'frozen' baits, au contrair, I have sometimes been top rod using them.....I do like the caviar & cranberry frozens though!
On the point of boilies, is there such thing as mini-boilies anymore, you know the tiny ones for Tench & all that

I am sure that the firm that made those tutti frutti ones a while back must still make them? I think they do anyway.

Tony Richworth still make mini tutti frutti's and god bless uncle Bobby for doing so.
Most bait rolling companys will role baits down to 8mm in size

Yeah but only in the winter when they are not so busy.
I know of a company that will roll this size all year round....(its a little bit more money, for the trouble)

What you're doing is just fine Jim except they could be a bit rounder - I'm sure Simon keeps the popups for your prettier customers and also keeps giving us the offcuts ! (Desperate Dan sends his love)
Yes Jim, but it's such a pain opening all those little 400g packets....that's one per spod?!

Top of the mornin,
Re :this idea of a boillie's lifespan frozen or readymade,
could the packing have anything to do with it ?
Looking in the larder there is a variety that can be stored
there but once opened must go in the fridge .
Could there be a happy medium ,ie airtight packing then stored in a cold place for some time?

Dear S.A.
Shelley Can roll his own but I'll do anything for you dear!!!!!
On a serious point to all those lads out there who want really small bait, we will in the future be making a pellet boilie machine but not for a while! My suggestion is simply to crumb the boilies. I do often do it. It's easy. Thaw them out and stamp on them! If you ever see me on the bank doing that strange dance you'll know what I'm up to. I can see it now I've invented a new activity for Carp anglers!
I must admit these days I tend to prepare a lot earlier and put the bait back in the machine and let it crush it for me. You can do your own very easily with a food processor.
Now all of you, back to my "Readymade" question or stay after school

Hi Friar(who?)
Yes but they catch don't they?????
Jim
Ever thankfull I'm not French
I like readymades as they are so convenient, but worry that they are not as good quality as frozen etc..and that the preservatives put the carp off. Also that they are too overflavoured for long term use(?),blowing quicker on a water.
I have been experimenting of recent,(in fact ever since I was banned from the freezer due to Xmas goodies!!),with air-drying baits. They go like ROCK!
How long do they stay like this once underwater?...does anyone know? Are they off putting at times due to the fact that they are so hard ,as having done match fishing I've had to make paste as soft as possible to get a bite.
They also lose nearly all of their smell so are they less attractive or does this all disperse again once soaking?,(mind, they are multiplex in this instance which do not smell much anyway.....until you're drying them!!).
Any ideas?!....thanks all,
Smarts
