View Full Version : PVA Bags in Winter
I've had a lot of success on the PVA bag and trout pellet at Frimley this summer and autumn but am a little worried about using it in lower water temperatures.
I've got some 'cold water' PVA stocking bags but are they really effective in winter temperatures ? Anyone got any experiences of using PVA in the cold ?
Yea pva bags are good in winter,i suggest getting the clear ones instead of the stockings, they dissolve within seconds and are pukka for casting

the only time i have found pva residue on my rig is when i have used pva string to tie up a pva bag. i don't use string anymore for this very reason. i just 3/4 fill the bag, tie a knot in it and hook the bag with the gape of the hook directly under the knot. the knot holds on the cast, the pva melts off the hook (as there is only the thickness of the bag to melt) and there is no residue...
ive' been useing temple products pva bags and rate them highly. crushed boilies or choped ,ive' caught within 30 mins of casting out so they must disolve very quickly.
in replay to ian w ,i picked a holding up area and kept baiting short sessions ,if i don't catch within 3 hours im of home 8 fish in 12 short sessions so far ,then bait up again 3 times aweek
if you are using pva anyway, secure your lead on the cast with pva tape. this will melt, leaving your running lead free to, er, run...!
Whatever you do, don't use the Gardner Bags 'cos they're crap! I bought three packets during the summer of both the mini size and the normal size, and didn't manage to even open one let alone use one! They were all stuck together as soon as I opened the packet. Apparently this is a common problem with these bags, so don't waste the money. Richworth bags are the nuts, and are now marketed under another name, Contact I think. These still dissolve well in the winter, and I have used them with pellet and had some good results even in December and January. Try tying them with a bit of wire to stop residues staying round the lead, and you can reuse the wire when you reel in for the next bag. This also saves on PVA string!
use the off cut from the tops of bags as handy 2 or 3 bait stringers.
carp r us bags are the best i have used. they dont ladder and are easy to tie up. i put the lead and bait in the bag, unless the bait is dipped in something other that oil.

Depends what sort of rig you are using doesn't it?!! It also depends how tight you twist the metal on. You do have to use your brain now and again, and apply a bit of common sense!! There is no reason why with the majority of rigs, a little bit of coiled metal is going to turn it into a death rig, cos if there was I wouldn't use it. After you have twisted it round the PVA bag, when the bag dissolves the metal is very free running so does not act like a STOP as you put it.
Anyone tried injecting liquid attractors into pva bags ? I've started putting a syringe full of mainline acivator into my bags of chopped baits and pellets and am getting a lot of takes.
i have used pva bags *full* of grange dip - absolutely brimming with the stuff.
maximum attraction, minimum food...

I've been using PVA mesh bags throughout the year on one of my rods and sometimes both.
Have done pretty good on them too.
Have messed about with soaking the bag in various boilie dips etc & more often than not have caught.
