View Full Version : Meat
Has anyone used meat as in stewing steak, liver or pork rind as bait? I am experimenting with making paste baits at the moment and wondered if any of the above is a good bait and for what species?
I've never gone down that road, but anglers I used to fish with, when on big rivers used mince mixed with brown crumb as feed, and £1.50 worth of stewing steak on the hook. The total cost of bait was about £8....far cheaper than buying maggot or caster. Chub and barbel love this...and, surprisingly, this is an excellent approach for skimmers on a river!! A sliver of stewing steak on a 16 or 14 with a small ball of mince/crumb as feed. Worth a shot. I've seen a lot of results using this method on rivers such as the Thames,Severn etc.....

Tony,
I use to use stewing steak on the Lea all the time for Chub and Mince meat mixed with brown crumb as ground bait. Cut into little strips and fished on size 8/10 hooks it could be legered or float fished, it also accounted for most of the other species in the river.

Just to add to this thread..... can a fish sense protein? I am sure they can and would it be correct that any foodstuff with a hight protein count could be a good bait?
Are there any other things that a fish could sense in it's food?

I was coincidentaly having a conversation about using meat as bait with Smarts earlier today, I have used before, with success on the Kennet and the Royalty, steak for chub. I use 1-2" cubes of steak, about 1lb, which I then coat in about 3 teaspoons of madras powder. I then leave it in the fridge for a couple of days (in a poly bag) to really marinate nicely before using or freezing.
I have also caught good river ream on this.
Daisy.
