Neither. I think both the weeklies are frankly a negative influence on the sport. I do not honestly think there is enough going on in the world of fishing to fill, not one, but two weekly newspapers. So even if you take out the staggering quantities of display advertising each week, they have to overdramatise stories and overpublicise the same old faces, matchmen or specialists, who in some cases - not all - are bounty hunters or publicity seekers ! And give the average angler an inferiority complex about praiseworthy catches. In this respect I agree with Neil Wayte's comments in 'Rambling on' on the home page. If there was one, fortnightly paper with a less hysterical style and a more balanced approach to fishing I reckon we'd all be better off.

I buy both papers, mainly to keep up with things for my website. I just wish they would spend less energy sniping at each other and concentrate on more serious issues.

Did anyone see the editor's comments on one of the letters in the Mail about someone starting a website ? Totally negative and used the opportunity to 'have a pop' at AT. I bet they don't print my letter of complaint!

Anglers Mail, they pay you for your pictures and cover RMC, but I do like the specimen page in Angling Times, they even had a bit on Eel fishing two weeks ago. As for monthly mags. Coarse Fisherman is Okay and Waterlog is an interesting read every two months.

Anglersmail because I've taken it for more years than I care to remember.I get on well with the guys inthe office and as Bob says they pay for the use of your photos which helps pay for my fishing.
Having said that I do read the times occasionally and enjoy it.

The Mail as it's more managable and as Bob states, it covers RMC. As for monthlies........pretty much every fishing mag going!!..................Hmmmmmm.........looking forward to an article on catching bream......can't believe I didn't catch the one that was in the lake on Wednesday!

I prefer angler's mail to the times because i prefer the size of it and that it is a magazine rather than a newspaper. They also pay for their photos, although i dislike it at the moment because they have failed to return both photos i have sent in, even though i enclosed SAEs with each of them.

Sam phone them up and ask about your pictures. They don't bite and will sort it out for you.It often takes a month for the pictures to come back.

Following on from Stuart's comments, does anyone think that IYCF has gone backwards since the new editor (K Wilmott ?) has been in place ? I agree there is some very good material in Coarse Fisherman but I do wish they'd lighten up a bit - while we all love fishing and want to learn and improve, it is a sport, hobby and relaxation after all...

Regarding monthlies..
When I re-started fishing in '93 (about the time I got married strangely enough!! lol) I bought IYCF regularly for a couple of years but stopped after the advertising pages outnumbered the feature pages by about 10 to 1 and I think it's still the same now. Currently I enjoy Coarse Fisherman but that is starting to get a bit repetitive. Understand there is a new monthly out now with contributors such as Stef Horak and Phil Smith - can anyone shed any light because I havent seen it on the shelves locally yet ?
The best magazine as far as I am concerned for the all-rounder (cannot comment on Carp mags) is actually the bi-monthly "Waterlog" which has interesting stories not just instruction and adverts.

Lee - Coarse Angling Today, the second issue should be in the shops about now. They also have a website, link can be found <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.hooklinks.net/hooklinks/publications_h.htm>here</A>

I always get the Anglers Mail, far better content, smaller and more compact and most important of all, when you are session fishing and have run out of loo roll, the print doesn't come off on your bum like Angling Times.

I love reading fishing magasines and will buy any that are on the shelf (not many usually) But most of all, i like Improve your coarse fishing, anglers mail, angling times, advanced pole fishing, match fishing, coarse fisherman, and the carp ones. also i occasionally buy fly fishing mags.

Youre Manic!!! (lol) The idea behind this thread was to start a "heated" debate on the differences between the two publications, i.e. content, size, quality, etc.. but one similarity that I find rather tedious is the "Tabloid Exclusive" mentality displayed by both. I know they are trying to out do each other and therefore out sell each other but this is detrimental to our great sport. At present, I favour the mail for picture quality and size - the content is comparable with the Times but if I hadn't opened the cover of last weeks Times on the newsagent shelf last week I would never have known that a record Barbel for the Avon had been caught. I suppose if I wasn't tight I could always buy both!! But my point is important Angling moments should be shared.

I buy both, but I reckon that AT has much more to offer! You have all the writers Ian talks about plus Terry Hearn every third week and Bob Nudd for the Match anglers!

I also feel that AM slag off `other weeklys` too often! Sad really!
