LONDON (Reuters) - A Tesco store in southeast England has been fined 30,000 pounds for polluting a river - with shopping trolleys.
In the first case of its kind, the store in Cheshunt, Hertfordshire, was found guilty of "knowing and permitting" shopping trolleys to be dumped in the River Chelmer.
The Environment Agency said it removed 51 shopping trolleys from the river during a spring clean-up in 1999, 33 of which were clearly identifiable as belonging to Tesco.
"The shopping trolleys were seriously reducing the amenity value of the river... as well as posing a threat to navigation along the river," the agency said in a statement.
