hi,
some friends of mine own land around a strech of a small tributary of the avon that contains fair numbers of Chub, perch, roach and pike of unknown potential.
I have fished it a little before, and have caught chub to 4 1/2 lbs, but i have seen bigger specimens, and perch to 2 1/2lbs.
I am going to give it a go quite soon and was woundering what you think the best sort of tactics would be for big chub and perch?
there are no restrictions.
thanks
sam

For big perch i would have thought that a big worm is the best bait. and for chub cheese paste is good.CM

If you want to single out the larger Perch I would use a live bait for them, as for the chub cheese or bread. A nice big juicy lob will take both species. If it is a small water freeline tactics produce well.

thanks for the info.
When i fished it before the chub and perch were mostly caught on maggots, but on certain days the chub seemed up for floaters.
what sort of rigs could you recommend?
thanks
sam

I only ever freeline floaters for Chub as I fish smallish rivers.... the way I mount a floater/mixer is to tie a loop in a rubber band (a thin one) and snip the rest off. I tie this loop with 3 overhand knots. I then push the point of a size 2 - 4 hook through the knot and push it up to the eye of the hook. I use thos big Febo biscuits and attach them to the elastic band loop. This works well for me. You can superglue them to the hook but the loop method works well. This method keeps the hook clear of the mixer and you will connect with 9 out of 10 takes. I also use this method with carp as well with a lot of success.

Sam,

Why not try using small lures or spinners - Perch love these and the Chub will also take lures. Make sure you use a wire trace as there will be Pike around. If you do not fancy this then get yourself some lobworms and freeline them. You will be surprised just how far an unweighted lob will cast.

Good luck

Rivercarper has beaten me to that one...... on-site advice, best thing I can offer /images/forum//icons/wink.gif

Other than that, roving approach, freelining big natural baits, worms, minnows, etc will get you both species, and slugs are superb for the Chub.

Regards, and good luck Paul

Alright Sam,
The way to fish for the Perth is with a small live bait. Try minnows to start with, and move up and try Dace. It it also worth trotting with a small brandling, and feeding maggots!

As for the chub, the only way I think to catch lots of them is with maggots, or either a blockend feeder or float. Only if the water is coloured would I use paste, cheese, meat etc!

Hope this helps!

Cheers
Garth

Slugs, you know those big ugly black ones that are marauding the gardens at the moment, ideally freelined to likely spots will catch chub. Ledgered cheese (big lumps) also. Have also caught good fish on prawns!!!

Brandlings/red worms are my favourite perch bait, but the minnow livebaits work very well too and tend to sort the larger ones out.

If you are familiar with a fly rod that method is great for Perch and chub..... I had 9 Perch in 2 hours the other day and 3 chub up to 4lbs yesterday on the fly....... other methods will catch you more fish but there aint nowt like catching fish on a fly rod....
