View Full Version : Zander...
Are there any Zander fishermen out there??
Just wondering if there is a more favourable time of year to fish for Zander & are there preferred methods for times of year....e.g. livebaits in summer. Are they caught on anything other than fish baits & lures?
Old Bury Hill is just up the road from me & I fancy trying for some Zander, any info welcome....
I seem to remember some1 suggesting a Zander fish in???
What was the outcome?

Zander are my target for the Autumn, I have never caught one and would like some advice. I will be fishing the Fens and would like to know what are the most suitable rods, line strength, rigs, etc.
I've never caught a Zander but also plan to have a go for some later this year. From what I have read about them the kind of tackle that you should use should be relatively light as whilst they do go to high double figures the majority of the fish you are going to catch aren't going to be huge - maybe use a heavyish avon rod with 8lb line - there is no point using heavy pike style tackle. As with most predators they don't like resistance so freelined or very low resistance rigs work best. Obviously some kind of wire trace is essential.
They do a lot of lure fishing in the US for Walleye, which I think, are kind of similar to Zander (could be wrong!). Small lures and rubber jigs seem to account for a lot of fish.

They are very sensitive to resitance & have an uncanny habit of throwing hooks. I would recommend going as light as you you think is safe (barbel rods, 8lb line etc) without compromising the chances of landing fish (you will be unable to avoid pike as well) size 8 or preferably 10 trebles and small 2-4 inch live or dead freshwater baits. If using deads, I would recommend float fishing on the bottom using just a large waggler, rather than a pike float. Most catches seem to come from the marginal shelf so a stealthy appraoch is vital. As for conditions, they feed best at night, but if you can only fish during the day (ie Bury Hill) try to choose an overcast day, or when it has been raining for a few days & coloured up the water. Old Bury Hill fished excellently last year during all the floods.
Best of luck chaps.
Mike.

Thanks Mike, I'm looking forward to a new challenge, I was thinking of using freeline or light leger deadbaits, rear drop off indicators, open bale arm and front buzzers.
I will take your advice and use 1lb8ozs Barbel rods with 8lb line. Bob
...has ne1 in here fished Bury Hill for the Zander? I'm probably going this week or next....

Simon, I have fished for them at OBH, and would recommend fishing along the front bank to the left of the lodge. I didn't think they opened for predator fishing until October though, so it would be worth a quick phone call.
Best of luck,
Mike.
Cheers......ne1 got their number handy?
