View Full Version : The Great Looking Carp List
OK, we have the 40+ list.
This isn't about size, it's about looks, nothing else. Small good lookers big stunners, it doesn't matter.
So it's about pictures, you'll need to email them to me and I'll post them up. So dig out those black commons, those plated warriors and the carp that just simply need to be shown around.

OK, I managed to catch her. My little fully in my garden pond http://www.rmcangling.co.uk/forum/images/graemlins/smile.gif
She was a bit shocked and looked like she was about to blow up. She somehow managed to puff herself up and stiffen all her fins. Poor thing. Sio I took a quick snap and got her back.
She was feeding well again this morning so no damage done. http://www.rmcangling.co.uk/forum/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Singy matey you have some quality fish in your pond http://www.rmcangling.co.uk/forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif http://www.rmcangling.co.uk/forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif
how big is the pond as well?
Pond is about 12ft by 6 and just over 1 meter deep. There are 5 carp in there and 3 orfe.
The fully is about 2 lb, the black linear is a little smaller and one of my commons is nearly 3 now. They will be 2 years old this summer
Heres a nice linear (http://www.singy.com/lookers/Mozzer-linear.jpg)
Pukka thread,
singy mate you should try to keep this one going full time.

These two aren't the bigest but are a little pleasing to the eye. Mirror (http://server5.uploadit.org/files/MitchWood-105_0545.jpg) Heavily Scaled Mirror (http://www.bigcarp.net/data/500/18628lb_FSMirror-med.jpg)
But it brings me to this Old Warrior (http://server5.uploadit.org/files/MitchWood-Cape.jpg) (bit of a dodgy photo) ,does any one have a photo of the big double Lin that was also from Cape Boards, now that was a cracker and would be lovely to see a photo of it after so many years.
I'm sure a couple on here have had the beauty.

the linear road lake... http://www.rmcangling.co.uk/forum/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

can we have a few nominations for best common in the land mirror etc.. and then a vote perhaps singy?
all for a bit of fun http://www.rmcangling.co.uk/forum/images/graemlins/smile.gif
think we best have fish that are alive as of this date.. and perhaps another one for all time lookers... ie snake pit common etc.
The road lake linear has lost it's loverly colouration and doesn't look as nice http://www.rmcangling.co.uk/forum/images/graemlins/frown.gif still an awesome fish.
hopefully she will be back to her former glory, after reading the bit in ACF, she lost all her glorious colour once before only for her to regain it again.. so fingers crossed

A good picture always does a fish proper justice! What always gets me purring is the picture of Tel with the long common out of the Brook. cracking photo and a cracking fish, although I have seen more recent photos that doesn't do the fish justice!
Another fish that makes my pants moist is Sally the queen of the valley. Proper large fat common that loves her food. Lovely fish, especially when Tony Hall and Lockey had her. Pukka carp I'm sure you would agree!
Talking of lovely looking fish, I've just been drooling over the article on the home page.
Roach Pit - will done Kidney1, great article and some very special fish.
that fully scaled (http://www.rmcangling.co.uk/images/uploads/roachp_29_9lb_300.jpg) is awesome
oh yes th roach pit
could be a long thread if we include all the stunners in there!
Awesome fish. Lets face it, fish like that get everyone drooling and thats what people want to catch.

wow..is that black jack dave?...pukka fish fella!!
nice fish dave!!! whats the weight?
I seem to getting the hang of this computer lark so here is the other side.
It is indeed 'Black Jack' from a big gravel pit in Cambridgeshire, the weight (although fairly irrelevant when they look like this) was 33lb 8oz.
One of the best lookers I've ever seen let alone been lucky enough to catch.Other side (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v469/cypridiot/fish/BlackJackBest.jpg)

looks like a lump of coal, stupid question: is it because the water is gin clear that it is that dark? http://www.rmcangling.co.uk/forum/images/graemlins/smile.gif
No, I don't think that's a stupid question at all.
I believe that the clarity of water, and the depth, do effect the colour of carp quite a lot. Some of the really murky lakes I've fished have had very pale and anaemic looking fish in them and, in the clear one's, I'ts often worked the other way. In saying this though, the other fish in this particular pit are nowhere near as dark as this one so the specific strain and genetics must also play a large part in the way they turn out.
I caught another fish this year (from a lake that hardly ever gets fished at all) it suffers from a massive annual algea bloom and, as a result, it is green for most of the summer. Maybe this contributed to his amazing colour or, maybe it didn't, either way I think you will agree, it's an absolute stunner! (just needs to grow a bit now)uncaught? is that a G5 remote in your hand Dave?
stunners mate, looks very similar in colour to the fish I have caught in the canaries before. these lakes are quite high in altitude and also go green at certain times of the year.
NorfolkBob
07-10-2004, 10:05
agreed Singy - i had one from the canaries - big double which looked similar.
Of course - genetics/and local water conditions are the predominant factors on fish colour - but you have missed one gentlemen - diet!
Nice fishes indeed...!

lew,so would you say that black jack feeds predominatley in the silt?,hence the colour? http://www.rmcangling.co.uk/forum/images/graemlins/smile.gif

So what about bright red carp
Bloodworm ?
Robin Red?
What about the orange tail thing you get with some carp ?
Always wandered about the orange spots you get on some carp.. How and why??
<------- This ones a stunner http://www.rmcangling.co.uk/forum/images/graemlins/smile.gif
tcpcrewontour

What about the orange tail thing you get with some carp ?
a lot of species of fish have bright colours/ spots to induce breeding ..but i doubt that is the case with carp
So what about bright red carp
they is embarrased about being caught and blush http://www.rmcangling.co.uk/forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif
Diet must paly a part in a carps colouring
but im not so sure its the main factor really as quite often you get some with pink bellys whilst others in the same lake are not like that
Agree water colour plays a part in how dark the fish are
when viv put the new generation in sutton a year ago they where jet black (probably because of the tanks they had been kept in) a year down the road these fish are as silver as the rest of the sotck in the lake
the more coloured the water the lighter the fish are generally
except @ spawning time then you get some weird old colours appearing !
NorfolkBob
07-10-2004, 12:43
my tank fish change colour according to their state of health and water quality.
if not well they go pink/red.
MattPilky
07-10-2004, 12:44
colour for me varies with genetics/ strain as lewis said, other factors also prevalent.
Water clarity, temperature and diet. Lower temps more ornage red they become.
Orange tails / spots has to be genetics.
Environment is the main one for me.
Ever noticed how sacked fish sometimes go paler? stress or is it just a dark environment?
Dark mouths.. are we talking internally? if so for me it's damage. scar tissue ( check out the old tip lake photos )
An example of environment: when I used to livebait http://www.rmcangling.co.uk/forum/images/graemlins/frown.gif I used to put my liveys in white buckets as they became much lighter in colour so they stood out more when using them.
jonmiller
07-10-2004, 12:45
what about excessive use of baits with robin red, yurns them pink or is that due to rich bloodworm beds?
Phil_Appleby
07-10-2004, 15:02
I baited up on my synd last autumn for a period of time and had a nice fish of 28+ that was really pinky round the vent area on the pics. This was not evident on previous pics of other peoples captures so was obviously caused by the robin red in my bait.
Question is, does this potentially harm a fish if it eats a large quantity of bait containing robin red...? http://www.rmcangling.co.uk/forum/images/graemlins/confused.gif
