View Full Version : Cooking Hempseed
I understand it's possible to shorten the cooking time for hempseed by using a domestic pressure cooker rather than simmering in a normal saucepan. Anyone tried this, does it work, what timing in the pressure cooker do you use and are there any additives (like bicarb.) worth using ?
Using a pressure cooker, I cook hemp for about 25-30 minutes, no pre-soaking required. I don't add anything, and I always save the water for mixing groundbait.
Hope this helps,
Paul
sounds interesting squire..so tell me why has everyone been boiling up hemp if there is no need to,is it cuz it is a particle and people presume it needs boiling like u would a peanut or maize etc etc.personally i just shove it in a bucket pour a load of boiling water on it until it's all covered andf then let it sit there for however long it is before i go.plus i add 1 litre of hemp oil for every 8 kg of hemp.

Maybe it was to show the white kernel to make it visual. This would still help for roach as they feed by sight, and of course, makes it possible to hook.
Has anyone seen the new dummy hempseed along the same lines as the sweetcorn?....brilliant stuff.

Ian, what does soaking it for a couple of hours achieve ? As I've always understood, hemp needs either cooking as already discussed, or soaking for at least 12 hours. Either option is to make the hemp split, the old books reckon this makes the seeds look like tiny water snails ? But soaking for only a couple of hours would do...... what ?
Paul
I'm sure my missus would applaud any method that doesn't end up with me stinking out the whole house boiling up the seed!! lol.

PaulG...stop them floating......as they do if you chucked them in straight from the sack!

Didn't they boil it years ago to stop it growing? You wouldn't want this stuff growing all over the banks of our lakes - would you?
Blimey, what a lot of replies to a simple query. Thanks everyone. By the way the hemp is for loosefeed for Barbel.
I would like to know the answer to the one about what does a short soak achieve...
But being game for a laugh I may well soak some and cook some and try both alongside each other.
Martin.....aren't the seeds all treated before we buy them to stop them germinating?......do they do this by boiling them for a period of time?

I believe they are killed with UV radiation but this was not the case years ago

Question Mr experts. We all know that one of the reasons that Hemp seed was not allowed on sale unless it was sterilised was to stop it being able to germinate, not just to save our banksides but to stop those naughty chappies who may have wanted to grow the stuff.
What I want to know though is why do some fishery managers / owners still ban the stuff if it is no longer addictive to the fish?
Andy
Clive, the odourless method of cooking hemp.....you need a pan or bucket with a tight fitting lid for this. Put you hemp in, and fill the container with boiling, and it has to be boiling, water, to at least 2" over the hemp. Put the lid on, make sure it's really tightly sealed, and leave it for 24 hours. After which you will have perfectly prepared hemp.
Smarts, cheers for the explanation re the purpose of soaking for a couple of hours, I understand now.
Regards,
Paul
Errr - correct me if I am wrong someone but I thought that;
1. Anglers' hempseeds if allowed to germinate would grow into the kind of hemp that they formerly used to make rope, and not the one that makes the mind expanding/wrecking drug;
2. Fish don't get addicted to hemp in a druggy sense - they try it, like it and then will be prepared to eat it when they it's available. But fish can also get similarly "preoccupied" with specific natural foods as anglers for Trout (on daphnia, pinfry or caenis) and believe Pike (on small fry) can confirm.
But if I'm wrong please let us know...
Thanks Paul... at last something that'll make the wife happy! I'll give her your recipe. lol

Hi John.....
Hemp is closesly related to Cannibis as we are all aware and I hve been told that if you smoke it you can get a very mild effect from it.... I used to use Hemp in plumbing and when the blowlamp used to scorch it, it smelled of dope.....
I don't think fish get addicted to it neither, they just eat it and because the seeds are small the fish will hold in the swim for a reasonable length of time....
I think the reason for some waters a while back banning it was because they thought that a lot of bait put in would go off and poison the water....
Tony
Yes, agreed Tony. I can recall when I was a lad and just starting to fish (before President Kennedy was shot, shall we say...) there were various old wives tales about hemp in circulation, all of which were basically wrong !
The only other thought is that the "no hemp 'cos it will rot in the water" fishery rule is misplaced because surely that logic could apply to anything used as groundbait ? The sensible rule is RMC's on Burghfield match and blue pool - "anglers are requested to use reasonable, not excessive, quantities of ground bait".

Tony,
Back in the 70s I worked at the headquaters of L.V.R.P where it was growing wild along the banks of a stream.
When it came to light we had to get rid of it, for weeks I had some very happy gardeners.

i find the easist method to use (cus i use loads of hemp) is to get one of those big cooler box things. got this one off sir maylin in BC! fill it up with hemp, and cover the seed in boiling water allowing for expansion with water retention. put the lid on and 24 hrs later boom! you have cooked hemp ready to rock and get those hangers wanging! /images/forum/icons/smile.gif

....yes the ol' cooler box method....taping up the lid will also keep the heat in longer, to maximize the effect........yer sarnies go a bit soggy though!

One way is to half fill a cheap flask with boiling water bit of bi-carb and some sugar, by the morning it will be ready and you can use the juices in the bait mix too!
I have never personally added salt but I bet a lot of carp baits have natural salt in them... I only add brown sugar, bicarb and a touch of garlic.
Tony
Garlic for the carp eh Tony? Lol.
I tried Ian's "soak it and see" version and it works no problem. I actually soak and ferment mine along with other seeds and the hemp splits anyway. You can tell the difference......the hemp really smells of....well......hemp!!
