View Full Version : Any tips for kingsmead1
Happy new year everybody.
I currently have a ticket on Horton, but when the season ends March 31st, i`m going to give kingsmead1 ago for the spring untill May 31st. I was looking for any tips that would stand me in good stead for the 2 months i`m there. I`ve heard that they respond well to a bit of bait.
Any tips for the water would be welcome.
Has anybody given particles (Hemp, Maples, Aniseed blend) a real good go? maybe these in quantity?.
Dave.
Come on don`t be shy!
i`m sure Someone out there can share a tip or two.Or is it a bit of a secret to what works on Kingsmead.

I caught about 14 fish between july and the start of october last summer which I think was OK going. I liked the 'shady point' best although casting can be a bit awkward due to the trees - don't really know why they cut off some branches but not quite enough to cast without kneeling or getting in the water? anyway, beside the point. I also caught from the Helipad and the secret swim - the fish don't often seem to get down that end but when they did it was usually in numbers. I often saw fish, including some of the bigger ones right in the bay by Dog Kennel 1 (excellent climbing tree) but although I fished there a few times I never caught from there. It was difficult to find nice spots due to all the weed. A guy called Frank did quite well from a swim on the 'mud bank' and a guy called Adrian? who was bream fishing quite a bit had 1 or 2 from near the boat pool inlet. I used particles all the time, generally with pop ups over the top on the silkweed. The particles were mostly red band + hemp + sweetcorn + trout pellets of various sizes I normally put out about 1/2 a bucket to my main spot, a shallower area about 30 yds out, over to the left if you stand on the end of the point. Then topped up each afternoon or when I thought I needed it. I also normally put out about a pound or 2 of 18 and 14 mm boilies (Ice Red). Not masses of bait in the Jim Shelly sense of the word but a good feed, incedentally I never caught 1 bream which was quite dissapointing as some are really big apparently. I found dawn by far the most productive time although all morning was good if it wasn't too hot and they had got stuck into the bait earlier. Having said that I caught the Thorpe Park common in the evening. Takes were often preceded by liners (slack lines are best they tell you so much more just ask Jim Gibbibson) and rolling over the bait. In general I usually felt there were more fish up the Island lake end - maybe due to slightly shallower depths and more weed, I don't know. Anyway best of luck to you mate
Thanks for all the information sam, hopefully a can catch a couple. The swims near the gate to Horton look very nice, are these generally good areas?.Also how big did you have the Thorpe park common at.
Cheers
Dave.

I will say thanks too as I am thinking of having a go over there for a few months. Even using the bait I'm on. lol Love margins. Love stalking too but probably not too good this time of year.
Yes thanks for the detailed help, much appreciated. Slack lines seem to be the way forward, conditions permitting (no snags etc.). I intend on using hook lengths about 12 - 15", is this a good start?
i did alot of stalking on here i found the love very hot days and will show them selfs as they cruse around, will take a floater its not easy ,found them in the margin afew times each end ,they do follow the wind ,the best swim is they one with the fish in rember that, heily pad ,very good swim spring time and the shady swim ,the rest of the year all over the place as for bait ,particules, fishmeal boilies ,troutys all work
the mead can be a strange place. the hotspots vary from year to year, but if you find the area being fished the hardest, you will find the spot which produces most fish - logical really.
the shady swim that sam bale talks of is/was the hotspot this year. you couldn't get in there at all at one point - bloody students fishing during the week (sorry sam)!!! the helipad was last years top swim, the secret the year before. the fish move about a great deal - i personally have a theory that some of the fish in there regularly go round the lake 2 or 3 times a day in the summer. you can watch them cruising backwards and forwards all day long.
slack lines work without a doubt, but think about where you are fishing to - fishing at distance when the weed is up requires a more direct approach. backleads and slacklines give pony bite indication when your line is passing through four beds of 8 foot weed! saying that, most of the fish caught come from the marginal shelf (slack lines here, definitely)!
use a sensible approach, and bear in mind the weed throughout the summer - no place for 6lb line. you can bet your last boilie that the carp know each and every hidey hole in the lake. if you want a shot at some of those bream, try using maize/casters over particles on one rod, or grange csl (let it get sweaty for a couple of days until it smells really toffee-ee)! the particles worked for me this year, 11lb slab was a nice surprise.
the spring will be the time to get down there - those new stockies will be feeding up big time...!
oh, and beware of the drunken star, man...!

Not sure which side of the bay you mean, by the kennels or opposite? I fished the side by the kennels a few times when there were fish in there but never got any, It was really solid with weed. I never got round to fishing the far side but I have seen people catching from there, really close in I think but there a a few nice depth variations a bit further out, it sort of drops down then shelves up again. Also my dad was spinning up there at the weekend (had and 8lb pike) and he saw a guy catching a smallish carp from the swim next to the boat pool inlet - probably one of the stockies but it could be worth getting on there earlier than you intended. I had the TP common at 32lb 6oz.
The swims i`m talking about are on the opposite side to the kennels near the bank that seperates kingsmead from horton theres a steel gate with a combination lock the swims along there look tempting. Right result with the thorpe park common cracking fish.

Keep it real
Dave.

the Denge/Dunge? mirror and the Thorpe Park Common are the 2 biggest stockies, then an unknown quantity of originals, as far as I know the two above are the only ones with recognised names, most of the twenties don't as it is essentially a fairly new fishery in its present state.
I could handle fishing with you, i`m not sure if i could handle drinking with the starman all day. Especially as he`s had a good few years more experiance on the subject than me!.
Starman, the 14 year old phillapinos are running scared.
Oh no the the starman!, thats what they cry!!!
Stellas on the STARMAN.!
Dave.
14? you don't think he's going to shell out for one of the *old* ones do you?
tight clenching around the starman,
bazza

yeah, forgot about the snub nose but then again it wasn't in there for most of the summer! I reckon the big original common must be the one everyone craves. Who lost the big original at the net? I had heard about it but no details, I tried a few times to target an original by fishing in different areas, using worms etc. but never really stuck at it and never had any luck.
a baliff lost one aboue 2-3 years ago can't remeber his name lives in feltham and drives traines he lost a common at the net
gary channing. i was there.
