I haven't fished Chertsey this season but I fished it a bit for a couple of years. I mainly fished for the perch & pike and you could usually be quite sure of catching a few in a day.
Try fishing on the motorway bank (if you can stand the noise) around any of the trees that are in the water.
Spinning was very effective - you could normally catch 3 or 4 fish in a lap of the lake. There are some massive perch in there - I had two of them follow a small perch that I had hooked and they were HUGE!
There are also some nice tench in there but I dont think they will be coming out in January!
Good Luck

Thanks Tom,
Does anyone know any goods spots for silver stuff and small carp?

I would wait till the weather warms up mate, it can be dead during the colder months. What are you fishing for?

Just looking for a good day out. My mate is interested in getting started and so I wanted to take him somewhere that would give him a bit of experience to start with. Anywhere in the Surrey area.

You could try Tanyard Fisheries, near Dane hill, west sussex... there are a lot of fish there and it is a day ticket water. If he is a beginner maybe introduce him to stickfloat fishing on the Thames when the levels drop, or the mole or Wey. If I was taking a new angler out I would take him/her on a days Chub fishing on the river Wey or Mole using Cheese paste as bait. Travel light with one rod each and cast into alternate swims.
