rooky,
Thanks mate, I will get some tomorrow.
Any other suggestions ?
When set up for a session, try some josh sticks, i to suffer from these bites, been out to day my ankles are like ballons.Another tip, dont where lynx derodernt as it bring them to you in shoals, do you smoke, ive heard this puts them off, try jungle formula, that also works for some, you can also by bands that you put around your wrists and anckles that put them off.
Peronally i just suffer, it only a short time in the year when they are hatching off, by the end off the month it will be all over.

I dont know how true this is but i have heard if you take vitamin b6 for a few days before your session it changes body odour to one that is not so apealing to mozzies mind you after a couple of days on the bank even dogs wont come near me!
Yes B6 needs to be taken atleast a week before going, i`ve tried using it a day or 2 before going and it doesn`t make any difference at all, but take it a week or more before, and you get bitten alot less. It does work it just needs a while to kick-in

I don't normally react to Mosquito bites, but this year has been terrible. At this moment I am sat at my desk with about twenty five bites courtesy of Sunday evening at the Summer Pit.
These things are leaving bruises, welts the size of hamburgers.
Does anyone know where to buy the Deet stuff supplied by the army, as that always seemed to do the job.
Bought some stuff from the chemist a couple of days ago contains 20% deet havent had a chance to use it yet , sorry cant remember the brand name will look tonight when i get home.I dug out a spray i had in the garage for over a year and used it saturday it protected me for about 10 mins then i became mozzie bait now i look like i am going through puberty! Moral of the story buy fresh stuff every year.
I have heard that washing with lemon soap deters the mossies, you can get it at the chemist. The bites do seem to be bigger and hurt more this year.
I too, heard about the vitamin B6, (B1 is better). I've tried this for a while now and have been bitten twice in loads of overnight fishing trips whereas I'm normally fodder. The big diference is that the bites swell up huge, (you're right about the mossies being even bigger and badder this year), but go right down and don't itch at all. So.......vitamin B seems to work for me.

There is an alarm that repells mosquitoes and midges, these cost about £5-10 but apparently you need more than one if using them in a large area.

Use anything which contains a high percentage of deet, that will keep the blighters at bay!
I have just returned from belize where everything tries to bite lumps out of you. The best stuff i could get was from the pharmacy at asda and contained 60% deet. That worked fairly well, but some of my yank colleagues had 80% deet sprays and they never got bitten at all!

Sorry not to reply earlier (been fishing), thank for all the advise.
I have now got bites on top of bites, tomorrow it's up the chemist.
Antibite, B1, B6 and Deet spray.

I got seriously bitten last Friday evening at Fishers Green. I thought keeping well covered would keep the mossies at bay but I ended up with 2 bites on my head 10 bites on my hands and 5 bites on my knees where the little b******s bit me through a heavy pair of combat trousers!
The only thing that took the edge off my mosquito misery was a near 10lb barbel.
Next time out I will be wearing waders - bite my knees now!

So what is it about the Green this year, having fished it since 1954 I have never known it so bad.
Trouble is there are so many great fish to be caught I cant leave it alone.
Surely this has too be the best all round site on the RMC books.

Fished Summer Pit last night, loads of mossies around but I didn't get bitten once.....which is a change from the last two visits. I was using some stuff called MosiGuard, can't remember where it came from, Boots possibly, but it appears to work okay. Contains extract of lemon eucalyptus, and I think someone else has mentioned lemon somewhere, so maybe there is something to go on there ?
I asked my doctor about this whilst I was there last week and he said that oily skin repels them, citrus deters them, i.e eat a lot of lemons ( yuk !! ) and garlic in your blood stream will make them pull off you as they start to think about biting you, I have started taking garlic tablets and although they take a few days to start working I have noticed a reduction in bites, i.e. I only get bitten about 70 times a night instead of 200 !! If women were like mozzies I'd be in heaven !!!!!
Keep it real !!! Keep it British !!!!

You will find it's not only mossies that bite you midges, gnats and many other aquatic flies will bite you. The only way I used to get by was to take the missus and spray her with insect attractant..... and I keep moaning about being a single parent too....... seriously smoking does prevent it a bit but kills you quicker... there is a pill you can buy that you have to take every day for a week before you go.... cann't remember the brand name but its probably Vitamin b1/b6 anyway.

I really dont care what they are called that bites me, I dont like them.
So Iv'e been out this morning and got the stuff,Mosi-gaurd.Autan, B6, Anthisan and some rings to set fire too, which drives the little ******s away.
I will let you all know how I get on after tomorrow Night.
Bob
Millets do mosi rep.
They do a 20% deet for sensitive skin, a 50 Þet , and a 100% deet. They also do a natural one that has no chemicals but is a blend of eucalyptus, lemon and other stuff.
I got the natural on cus i thought it would be less repelling to the fish should i accidently contaminate bait or rigs.
It works well.
What we need to do is to get every lake to plant eucalyptus trees around the lake cus they repell mossies realy well
might just have to have a pot plant on the patio outside the bivvy.
I have just re-read this post . What a prat , It was B5 vitimins I should have took !!!! . Iv been eating shellfish B5, now I am bright red , and smell of squid !. Mossies stopped attacking, but swim full of cats!. Good luck to luton town this season. hope my fishings better than there football .

Dont know if it will help at all, but this is a true story that hopefully will make you chuckle.
I heard of one angler a couple of years ago who was getting constantly bombarded by mozzies. This chap asked his friend (a soldier) what the army used, and was given some cream by him that they used in tropical areas when on manouvers. This chap then took some fishing and smeared himself with this cream & went to sleep for the night. When he awoke in the morning, he was covered in hundreds of mozzy bites. When he told his friend about this, he was asked how he used it, he said he smeared himself in it, at which point his mate p****d himself laughing. He then said that his angling mate should have read the instructions properly, cos it wasnt a mozzy repellant, it was a mozzy attractant and you were supposed to smear it on to a tree or similar about 20 yards away.
I dont know if he still uses it though.
LOL

Probably the same as what Carpmad mentioned..
Field and Trek do similar stuff containing 20% DEET through to 95%, plus natural extract based repellents. They also do the mossie nets and the smoking coils.
So if that lot dont keep 'em away....
Picked up their catalogue over the weekend, and I have included their website as they seem to do a lot of good outdoor stuff which you might find useful

Took all of the advise, used all the deterrents and only got stung Twice.

I'm not surprised you didn't get bitten. All the B******s seem to be over here in Blighty biting us.
Okay boys.......theres a tablet called peratron (something like that anyway), they don't actualy stop you getting bitten but they stop the effects of the bites......ie the swelling, itching...etc

Trouble with Piriton is that I am not sure they have cracked the side effect of drowsiness. I used to take them for hay fever and if you used the double strength Piriton or took them for an extended period you felt pretty dopey, a bit like having a permament beer hangover. Which in some ways was worse than the hay fever. I now use Beconase which is a targetted anti-inflammatory nasal spray and works well. But no use for mossies...
