View Full Version : weather and fishing in france
Going to France for first time next week for 15 days.
Forecast says it's going to be hot!
Can anyone tell me whether, in their experience, fish can be caught during the hottest hours of the day, or if the mornings and evenings are the only worthwhile times.
Also, I've heard carp are less likely to take surface baits in france.

When i carp fished in France, the hotter the weather the more they fed, which i found really strange. As in England all the fish would have been on the top cruising around in there usual lazy mood.
During this heat (and it was hot!!) i did not see one carp on the top.
Also if you are after other species like Bream for example, when i was catfishing on the Saone, during the quieter moments in the midday sun we would float fish for them and it did not matter what the temperature was the fish seemed to feed all day.
Hope this helps a bit...MAXIMUS
Thanks mate!

When I fished in France I didn't manage to get them feeding on the surface at all.... it was very hot. 30 Degrees plus but it didn't stop the carp feeding. I was lucky enough to get the fishing rights on a friends lake that had never been fished for carp... we decimated it with sweetcorn freelined... 38 fish in 6 hours. Of course the owner wanted the fish to sell or swap for pigs and stuff. I returned as many as I could especially the 15lb + fish.
My mate (a first time coarse angler) and myself were deemed hero's in the villiage and were invited to dinner at the mayors house.... they are strange people sometimes but very hospitable..... we actually had carp for dinner.... sorry guys I know I am sad.

Are baits like sweetcorn & tinned meat readily available?
Cheapskate angler
Meat and baits like sweetcorn can be purchased from their supemarkets. Find local tackle shops for maize etc.
Thank you for the info chaps!

i had a forty plus mirror at 2 in the afternoon in unbelievable heat out in france. i don't think it makes a whole lot of difference what the weather is like, as long as it is fairly consistent...
Sweetcorn is readilly available but a lot more expensive there than here.... as for meats... they are available too. You can actually buy small pots of worms and maggots from the supermarkets but once again very expensive. When I go I normally go to ASDA and buy 24 tins of corn it's only cheap and also meat here. As a lot of the lakes there where I fish are unfished waters by carp anglers I always take the simple approach. It took 5 minutes to get the carp feeding on the corn in the margins.... if you go to a commercail carp fishery it totally different. I should imaging it's the same as the British approach with those round things and loads of bait.
Oh yeahh.... don't forget to buy your permit. You can get them from any Bar/Tabac shop or poast office for about £15 for 15days if they still do them.
