A while back a few people on the forum said they fancied a trip to Tyringham early this year and I just wondered if anyone was still up for it ?

I'm looking at going sometime towards the end of this month (weather permitting).

As far as I can remember Rivercarper, CB1_chig (Gary ?) and Pete Falloon were interested - any more takers ?

Bill.

The more the merrier... Rivercarper can't make it now, but lets see what Pete says and take it from there.

Shall we wait until the end of next week and set a date then, maybe for the week after ?

Bill.

I'm up for it and either w/e of 13th or 27th OK, unless you are planning a sneaky weekday trip? Could be arranged too... let me know... if I don't reply, email pete.falloon@bbsrc.ac.uk

PeteFalloon

Any more thoughts guys?

I did go up before Christmas and of course blanked.. it really needs lower water to see the features etc, but then again that would be less favourable for the barbel...

It is a long walk indeed, most of my walk was through fields 1-2ft deep in water... and I didn't make it to the weir runoff.. needs a clear day so I can leave my umbrella and take light kit!

Baits tried - flavoured meat, pellet paste. No groundbait.

Hi Pete,

I could make it either the weekend after next or if you guys prefer, a mid-week day ?

Looks like waders will be needed - lets just hope we don't get too much more rain in the meantime !

Bill.

PeteFalloon

Billy

if you mean 27th or 28th Jan that's OK, otherwise a weekday could be done... almost anytime except 23rd.

CB1_chig
10-01-2001, 12:47
Hi Bill any weekend day will do me and the same for Brian
27th 28th sound ok

CB1_chig
10-01-2001, 13:04
Ian don't you fancy coming along

PeteFalloon
10-01-2001, 17:08
Come on Ian, we're all bound to blank superbly!!!

Guys - since I'm an MKAA member, I can't get day tickets for this water. Can any of you, via RMC? I don't know your rules, and I was only asking since I think Graham Elliott might be interested in coming....

Billyo
10-01-2001, 19:30
Shall we say Sat. 27th Jan then ?

Pete, do MKAA do an exchange ticket then ? I think I can get two guest tickets on the permit I have. Let me check with Ian and get back to you...

Who's Graham Elliot - I've never seen him here before !

ATB,

Bill.

Ok saturday 27th is fine with me looking forward to it

PeteFalloon
11-01-2001, 14:24
Graham is usually on anglersnet site, and usually fishes St Pats I think - he's an experienced barbeller and a good guy! I don't know what the arrangement is with MKAA but I do know we can't get day tickets! (I think!)

sat 27 is fine too!

Billyo
11-01-2001, 16:12
I think I know who he is... was he chairman or something to do with Twyford & DAA ?

I think I may have seen him on an IAC/Second Chance fish-in we had at St. Pats in Sept. He was trotting on the opposite bank and gave my mate Stuart a load of info on the place... I think...

Anyone see Mainstream with Matt Hayes last night fishing at Tyringham, Mr Welch even made a guest appearance,.

Looks like a nice fishery though

GrahamE
13-01-2001, 09:15
Yes BillyO it was me, I took Stuart out a few weeks later and he bagged a couple once he changed to decent line strength. I waved a double under his nose to show him they were there.
Thanks Ian, a Lad at 49 great! Appreciate tickets
Should be ok for 27th Jan/confirm next few days.

Take care

14-01-2001, 23:16
Hi Gary,

I'll be going up on the Friday afternoon and staying overnight...

If you guys are leaving early, you could always meet up somewhere for breakfast if you take the same route...

Brian - It's probably easier/quicker for you to get to than most of us... straight up the M1, so I guess you'll get onto it from the M25 ??

Pete - have you got a permit to fish Tyrningham ??

Graham - check your private forum mail...

ATB,

Bill.

GrahamE
14-01-2001, 23:30
Thanks Bill, done so / replied. Will know tomorrow if I can make it. Cheers.

Thanks all
Graham

Billyo
15-01-2001, 18:44
Hi Graham,

Glad to hear you'll be there !

For directions, see the link to your left for RMC Venues. Tyringham is under the Group Venues heading.

As for a meet, I'm going up on the friday, so will see you all on the bank/in the car park.

There are a couple of others going on the Saturday morning, so you could meet somewhere for breakfast on the way through... does anyone know a local cafe that'll be open early ?

Bill.

Ian,

Where abouts where these BIG barbel spotted ? Do we have to walk miles ??

Another teste for edit mode...

Bill.

PeteFalloon
16-01-2001, 10:06
Argghh with those barbel! Erm not sure of a cafe, but there is the Toddington services near J12 of the M1. Tyringham is not too hard to get to though.. directions follow:-

These directions are coming from the south of Milton Keynes (ie M25 J21 for M1 north)

leave M1 at J14 - get in r-hand lane of slip road
go round roundabout and take 3rd exit, A509 to Newport Pagnell
Continue to next roundabout, and go straight on, B526 to Northampton, Newport Pagnell, Gayhurst etc.
You will go straight over a small r'about, into Newport Centre, past Aston Martin/Lagonda, cross a bridge over the Ouse, and come to a roundabout in the town centre just after a pedestrian crossing.
Turn right at this mini roundabout, leaving Newport on the B526 towards Northampton. Will pass a garage on R. Turn to Sherington shortly after, DO NOT take this!

Keeo going, pass through Lathbury. After about 1.5 miles, there is a turn to Tyringham, which goes under a small gatehouse. Take this turn, and park somewhere near the river bridge. That is the best parking spot, isn't it, Ian?

What's the general concensus about meeting up - we could find somewhere, either the services or perhaps in Newport, but it might be OK by the bridge if everyone can follow my instructions on a road map!

PeteFalloon
16-01-2001, 10:07
Bill
-yep, my MKAA book covers Tyringham.

CB1_chig
16-01-2001, 12:27
Hi pete how about we all meet in the services and have something to eat and then we can follow you to Tyringham
just a thought

PeteFalloon
16-01-2001, 14:44
Okay, we might as well meet up first if that suits you guys! And put on a few pounds, because if anyone is walking to Ravenstone end, we'll lose about half a stone each :-)

Anyway, what sort of time?

Billy - it looks, from latest news on the site, like you're going to bag a biggun!

Does anyone have any idea of tactics?
My usual winter approach on the Ouse has not involved much groundbait for the barbel, moving about a fair bit and fishing either spicy meat or pastes.. to limited success!

GrahamE
16-01-2001, 14:58
Toddingtons great for me. Someone decide a time.
Thank all that inside info on baits Pete, no I won't tell anyone.!

Getting excited already. Please get warmer!

Billyo
16-01-2001, 16:30
Hi Stu, nice to see you here at last /images/forum/icons/smile.gif

As for me bagging a biggun, Pete - you must be joking, I'm expecting a blank !!

I think I'll do the walk to the big fish - I reckon it's going to be very hard and if I catch one I want a biggy /images/forum/icons/smile.gif I'll take a look on friday and check out some swims !!

Baits - I'll be taking paste, pellet, meat, etc - the usual stuff...

Bill.

Below freezing. water temp 33. Billy fell in. Peter got lost walking 3 miles upstream. Gary enjoyed his breakfast. Graham found Adams Mill and sat on Ray Walton by mistake, thinking he was a garden gnome. Every one else is staying till they catch a fish. Two have frozen to the bank.

Is everyone ok about meeting in toddington services about 6:00/6:30 on the day

PeteFalloon
19-01-2001, 09:24
It will make me very ill, but yes! I'll just have to remember not to drink too much on Fri... hmmmm

Anyway, Graham I want to share more secrets, the only paste I have caught an Ouse barbel on was 50% fishy cat biscuits ground with 50% Trout pellet, and some soya flour for texture. The bite pulled the rod off the rest. It would normally have been in my hands but I was fighting with cattle determined to eat my umbrella...

I'll be sure to bring a camera and get some photos of the usual suspects. Photos of both dry and wet landing nets WILL be taken!

PeteFalloon
19-01-2001, 09:31
By the way chaps, I've been collecting forecast (Bedford) and measured (Cranfield) weather data on temperature and graphing it for a while. I don't have any decent water data, but it might help.. I try to update it most weekdays with data from the BBC website. Oh ******, it's snowing now.. but look at monday - hope we get a nice mild spelll!

Update fishing report.
Billyo fished Adams Mill, he started with us all but forgot to let go off his brolly. Peter Falloon Fellin. Neil waded thigh deep but still could not cast the required 100 yards to the river. Gary enjoyed his breakfast, then lunch then Dinner as his Mini Metro failed to rise above the motorway depth outside Toddington. GrahamE was rescued by an upturned cow and decided to float down and visit his brother in Bedford. One fish was caught, a flounder on Peters seafood pasty.
See you Saturday guys!

GrahamE
25-01-2001, 22:55
You forgot the worms.
TE HE

GrahamE
26-01-2001, 21:21
Well I think it will be interesting!
Iv'e sorted my gear out.
Aqualung / snorkel / floatation aid etc.
Just as an aside. IF the river should be unreachable, and I don't know it, is there any other options available, bearing in mind that I only have a Ticket for TY?
Otherwise I know a swim or 2 on the Loddon?

CB1_chig
26-01-2001, 22:22
Graham i got 10 score of lug and 10 of rag worm should be enough i hope, Also got some 6oz leads and four life jackets if there isn't enough we can always cling on to Brian,Can we launch the boat from the M1 LOL

GrahamE

A Whale.... you must be joking... :-)

Though it seemed to rise like something I canot seem to find the letters on this keyboard for.... (with fine editing)

Seriously - A VERY INTERESTING stretch of water that WILL produce fish.... only we got it wrong, as did the Met Office/ BBC weather centre !

What more / WHO else ca I blame it on ??? /images/forum/icons/smile.gif

Anyway... I thought all you guys had a good time ? Shame you missed the social in the pub /images/forum/icons/smile.gif

Bill.

Billyo
27-01-2001, 22:14
Come on.... Neil.... At least I've given it a go and tried a hard water !

Not somewhere where you can *spoil* yourself by getting a Kennet-Type Chub /images/forum/icons/smile.gif

I hope you all did better than us though, as it was very hard with the fields running us out of swims !!!

In all seriousness - a lot of potential...

Bill.

Paulm
28-01-2001, 07:37

Where next Bill river or lake?

Rivercarper
28-01-2001, 09:37
Tryingham Wash out.
I reckon we ought got to Billy's bit of the Kennet. Then we could have a few pints in his local and then he could cook dinner for us.Take our sleeping bags and crash on the floor at his place providing it isn't wet cos he's flooded it again.Love him.
Lets hope the next trip is for the members of the specimen group and will be before the end of the season.

Billyo
29-01-2001, 17:45
As for the next trip, how about Burghfield or St. Pats... ?

GrahamE knows St. Pats, so maybe he'll be able to offer some advice and we can actually catch a fish or two this time /images/forum/icons/smile.gif

Dates - what about very late Feb/early March ?

Bill.
