View Full Version : Whats your favorte hooklink material
lads what with thee being so many new hooklink materials avaliable what is your all time favorite. Mine personaly is the magnificiant Snakebite. for those of you who prefer silkworm and the like what do you see in it i personally cant stand it as it frays no end with me, is this a problem that you face or do you have tricks to stop it happening
cheers boys
Lofte
I would have to agree with snakebite its the most versatile material around at the moment, and i like the addition of snakebite gold. I have never personally had problems with silkworm, and in its own right is also a very good hook link especially the 25lb version. I aslo rate the esp stiff filiment very highly basically because you can straighted it and you can`t do that with amnesia.
Hi Lofte,
I've used Silkworm in 10lb for over two years landing carp to 25lb on it with no problems at all.It does fray when cut so can make tying some rigs a pain, but this can be rectified by using a seriously sharp blade to cut it in one go.
I've not had prolems with snags or the bottom damaging it in ways that I would not expect from continuous use.

For me it has to be the ultimate bird nest material multistrand. I must be lucky because never have any problems with it and I swear by it, most anglers seem to swear at it lol. Also it is unbeatable when used as a surface hook length.
I have had my best results this year on 10lb GR60 white mono tied no knot style.
Very strong, very easy to tie and very very cheap.
Oh and I had a 25lb common on 6lb mono on a snag free water, off the top, when no-one else could get a take.
Took a while to land though.......
Mine has to be Super Nova most anglers I know use it and love it as for Snake Bite your paying for the name back in August I met a man who runs a lake in Devon while I was fishing with him and his mate he had a fish as he was unhooking it I noticed his hook link was Snake Bite he then told me it was not Snake Bite it was exactly the same apart from it was black and a heavier braking strain he used to use Snake Bite and Snake Skin but his brother had found a cheaper alturnative with a 27lb braking strain he had been using it for years on some of the hardest club waters in Devon and on his own water. But nower days I use a flurocarbon hook link made out of Berkly Vanish with a 12lb breaking strain backed up with Score lead core in 35lb breaking strain and before any one asks I am not allowed to say what the cheaper form of Snake Bite is.
Hi all, I have got soooo much confidence in my present set up which I've used for a while now.
It's a combi-link comprising of 6ins of 25lb IQ and 2ins of 18lb Sink-link, not exactly rocket science, but it never tangles and it puts fish on the bank.
I found Snake bite wasn't stiff enough and the inner braid wasn't supple enough, still good though.

Anything that don't tangle
For me it has to be Amnesia, being a big fan of stiff links. I've tried other stiff link material, but keep going back to the stuff.
If however i was in a situation where i was to use a braid then Supernova or the old faithfull Merlin.
Can't say that im a big fan off Snakeskin / bite, i just can't seem to straghten it out properly, to pin it down.

Good point about the snakeskin.
I use this too, mostly for pop ups,and find that it does not straighten out neatly, lying on the bottom like bad line with memory.
Does everyone use it like this,or is there a way of making and keeping it straight?
Cheers,

A very good way to pin snakebite/skin down is to get some lead from the inside of leadcore and put 3 coils of it at both ends and the middle of your rig, it squeezes down tightly so it won`t slip. A tip for getting it straight put on your kettle and run the rig over the steam this makes the coating go soft give it a stretch and and while doing this let it cool and should stay straight, but don`t leave the rig over the steam to long or your melt it. I hope this helps.
Dave.
another good tip to straighten the hooklength out is to attach the hook to one ofthe eyes on your rods and reel is untill the line is tight but not so tight as to bend the rod tip then rub your finger one way down the hooklink a couple of times and hey presto its straight
Cheers guys,
I'll give it a whirl!

Close range I like a cheap braid called 'Dynaflex' in 18 or 21lb - its ten times stronger than steel and its diameter is unbeatable - its flat. I prefere monos for any fishing over about 30yds, minimizes tangling which always happens to me with braid if I cast it any distance. I'll use most normal monos, I also like ESP Ghost for very long range work - its quite rigid, yet invisible under water.
I do like Korda IQ in 15lb version for most of my bottom baits. It's held up well on a number of occasions catching carp too 33lb in a very weedy snaggy lake.
I do use snakebite for all my pop ups (except terry Hearn rig) and some of my bottom baits.
