View Full Version : Alternative baits..
Have any of you ever used alternative baits and caught fish on them? I have had chub on dolly mixtures and also jelly beans. Roach on silk weed (well known bait) and also most species on a fly.... I have used caterpillars and grubs found on the bank & caught fish. Any one got any secret alternative baits they want to share with us?

i don't know how alternative it is, but i have caught many a fish on butter beans and kidney beans...
Beans are a brilliant bait for tench & carp, pinto beans, black eyed etc. I use them quite a lot... I buy a mixed bean bag or tin and use different sorts. Once you get the fish feeding on the they work well.

A bait that i always carry with me when Barbel / Chub fishing are those 'Pepperami' meat sticks. Theyr'e great, especially when your getting pestered by nuisence fish. Theyr'e alot tougher than normal meat from tins and stay on forever.
Also if you get a bit peckish you can eat 'em.
*watch out for the spicy red ones*

coating luncheon meat in turmeric has worked in the past. either bag it and shake, or pan fry it to seal the spicy goodness in...!
Normally when flavouring up meat, i'd put the flavour and meat cubes into a freezer bag, give them a good shake up and pop them into the freezer untill needed. Freezing them like this draws the flavour into the meat thus making it give off its attractor for longer. Have never tried pan frying to seal it in.

i don't thonk pan frying draws the flavour in, it just sort of seals it!
it has the added bonus of putting an outer skin on the meat too - can be cast further with confidence...
