Can anyone help me with a number for some one who knows about old fishing books please. An old friend of the family has a 1907 hide covered copy of the Compleat Angler. He is trying to find out what it's worth and I would not like to see the old chap conned by some one locally.

I saw a copy of the same book circa.1890 in a secondhand book shop. It was the size of a small bible, and I was interested, so the old man removed it from the glass case to show me. It was priced at about £ 300 (out of my league !). I would therefore estimate that this is the sort of value on your friend's book (depending on condition of course).

Countryman Books are specialists in scarce, out of print fishing books and might give a valuation. The web site is http://www.countryman.co.uk.

Hope this is of some use.

Try calling or emailing Laura His**** - tel: 01425 470060; email: laura@chalmershallam.freeserve.co.uk .They have about 30 different copies of the complete angler in their catalogue at the moment ranging from 1750 to the present day. The ones that seem to be worth a lot of money are the really early copies or ones with hand drawn illustrations or something unique about them. It should be worth a fair bit of money but if it isn't a first or is damaged in some way don't expect to get too much for it.

In todays Anglers mail it was reported that a first edition original issue of The complete Angler or The contemplative mans recreation has been bought in America for £ 37,000 this was auctioned at Christies in Newyork. ( the beers are on Neil)

This means that by the year 2350, Neil's "River Carping" will probably fetch a similar price. The beers will certainly be on him then (when we all meet in that better angling place).
