View Full Version : Barbel
This may be a good one for IW.
If using biled baits for Barbel, what recipes would be best? What other baits are successful, say at Frimley?
What are the list members views on the introduction of Barbel into Still waters, particularly 'Bag up type match lakes' ?
Cheers

Boz have you just returned from the local pub mate.Biled baits never been big for barbel particularly at Frimley because I'm sure there are no Barbel there.
Sorry for taking the mickey but couldn't resist,I'm sure your get a sensible answer from Ian.
Your right but sadly for the wrong reason, I was in fact thinking of Fishers Green, I think Neil recommended a visit when we met at the Kingsmead Social.
Thanks

Ian,
The only time I use a boilie on the green is in heavy flood water.
Last season Fishers Green was very high and coloured for months, I was using a new bait from DTs.
I would make it into a paste and roll about half of it into 10/12mm boilies (boiled for only 30seconds).
If I then decided to fish a difficult swim, I would hair rig a boilie and wrapped it in paste, this way I knew there was a bait still sitting on the bottom even if the paste was washed off.
Every time I finished fishing I would throw the remainder of the boilies into the swim thus introducing a new food source.
It worked for me.

hello ,
im always facinated by the barbel.,im fishing the thames
this year for old cypry but ,also wouldnt mind bending in to
a barbel as ive never caught one!
i was thinking of using pepparami as i think its a bait which
would attract carp/barbel,any other tips, like water conditions
fast/slow,coloured/clear etc....
thanx
dtd
Dave , i use the spicy red pepperami on the river it is an excellant barbel bait fished over partiblend and pellets i have had chub to 6.5lb and barbel to10.02lb. On the plus side it is resistant most small silver fish ,keeps for at least a year in your rucksack .Negatively just about everything that swims likes it!

daytimedave,
As Jack has said; just about every thing likes pepparami and lots of other spicy type meat sausage.
I would only use them in colored water and prefer to use maggot, caster and sweetcorn over a bed of particles in clear conditions.
Stepped down carp tackle is ok for Barbel, but if you are fit there is nothing better than fishing light, going from swim to swim tip legering or rolling meat or paste.

You may pick up a few eels mate on the pepperami if you are fishing into the night..... It all depends on which part of the thames you are fishing... top Barbel bait though.... I have had a few smaller fish from the thames with hemp pushed into paste, don't pick up so many eels then.
Tony
Pike like it too,
i was using it on the Mole last year for the chub and hooked a near double pike, but alas it bit me off.
