it depends when (and where) you go on kingsmead. spring is busiest, which is when most fish get caught. makes sense, if you think about it... if you want the lake to yourself, go when it is raining, sleeting and blowing a gale in jan/feb. you probably won't have anything out, but you can test the durability of your gear...!

there were 80 fish to 13lb stocked recently, and these will be the ones getting caught in the spring. you will see them everywhere until they are banked a few times and then they vanish. if you are after an original specifically, they are scarcer than rocking horse do-do! the park common will be the one to have next year, especially given it's growth rate this year.

i love kingsmead. you have to work for your rewards, but they come in many guises (11lb bream was a nice surprise). most people give up, because it hasn't been (so far) a very consistent water. after three or four blank sessions a lot of people go back to their favoured waters, writing it off. if you let it, it will grow on you...big style...

Get along and enjoy the scenery. I have yet to catch anyhing (5 visits) but have decided to give it more of a go this year. It does get v busy early season so plenty of people to chat to when the going gets tough. Great to hear that some more stockies have been introduced. Best of luck.

the common, snubnose, came out quite a few times last year, escaped to the big side and is now rumoured to be back in lake 1. might be a scraper 30 - depends how much of a feed it has had, and when it comes out.

the bottom carpark can be accessed through the big black gates. there is another gate further in, and you hang a left before the boat pool carpark. the parking situation isn't ideal, but a lot of the problems come from anglers not thinking about what they are doing. there are local kids knocking about all summer, and some people leave stereos and other goodies in plain view, and then wonder why their car gets broken into.

if it isn't there, they can't nick it!

>> but for £40 its not bad value..

£40 is not good value if you leave stuff in your car and have your windows put through...!

Does it happen often over there that cars are broken into? Maybe we should do what we did at yateley and leave the cars open with nothing in them?

Maybe RMC should invest in security to protect their "ticket paying" anglers!!

not often, but it does happen. it doesn't warrant leaving your car open, just don't leave anything in it. i have heard of cars being done for the loose change on the dashboard, but there have been a few 'stories' about the parking at kingsmead so i take that one with a pinch of salt.

just use your common sense, and don't give them the opportunity.

public footpaths mean that is not always possible. don't get me wrong, i have never experienced any problems with my car, and the kids i have met have been ok. however, i *empty* the car (floormats, stereo, rubbish, loose change, fishing gear - the glovebox and cubby holes are all left open. if it is obvious there is nothing in there, curiosity cannot get the better of prying eyes).

i have spoken to people who have suffered, and it puts some people off fishing the lake, which is a shame.

Oh okay cheers. Just thought about the nightmare some had at Yateley two of us actually bought old bangers to go fishing with and left them unlocked with the rotar arms in our pockets lol. I am thinking of giving it a go in the near future and was a bit worried about the car.

the car park behind the kennals is the most secure all day people sit in the office at night its locked ,i use it all the time even when stalking the bottom bank of the mead ,ive not heard of any trouble in that car park ,as for bailifs partroling the car parks , its not up to the bailifs to make sure the cars are safe its up to every one to keep an eye open ,as bazza says dont leave any thing worth money in your car any where you fish .

Good point by Bazza, empty your glove box, and leave that open to show nothing is there....my van was broken into...it had nothing on display, but the tea leaves wanted a look in the closed glove box which unfortunately had a few goodies in - they never got what was under the seat though!

as far as i am aware, no angler is allowed to take their car/van/4wd onto the lake - that is what the car parks are for.

the work parties which frequent the lake from time to time are allowed, and it is usually a white pick-up 4wd. there will be a notice in the swims being worked on to let you know.

if you do see any cars on the lake, check to see what they are doing - it may be legit. if you have any doubts, check with ian welch...

I started after the 'busy' spring permit period last summer and it was rarely busy, during the week I was quite often on my own or 1 or 2 others and even at weekends the most I counted was 7 anglers which isn't that many on a water that size. There was a lot of 'group ticket syndrome' - people coming down for 1 or 2 sessions and blanking then not coming back.
Lovely water but I don't think I will have enough time to fish there this year - other plans and I have to work over the summer as I am skint due to not working last summer! Went down for a days spinning over Christmas, had one jack and my dad lost acouple of perch, all the action was from the swims either side of the inlet from the boat pool. But saw a pike under the bridge, as usual by the breeze blocks on the far side near the fence.
