Well, first off an opinion...
Whoever is responsible for the adverts in the carp fishing press saying South Lake is an "easy" water should be tied up and eaten by rats (they always go for the eyes first you know...). Chatting to different bailiffs, opinions differ. Some say it is down to RMC, others that the carp press have been asked to no longer put in that particular advert claiming South Lake to be an easy water with a "good" chance of a twenty.
Because I only have opinions and no facts I can't blame either... but my opinion is that RMC should rectify this problem, and quickly!! There are beginner carp anglers travelling long distances to catch an "English twenty" and are coming away VERY disappointed. We should be encouraging new carp anglers, not misleading them! I repeat, this is purely my OPINION.
Now thats out of the way... WHAT A BEAUTIFUL WATER!! For those that are interested, I fished swim 17, "The Back Bay" from Monday morning to Wednesday morning. First rod under the bush to the left, fishing locked up solid and sleeping on my rods!!! Bait was either Trigga bottom bait or 1 inch pop-up, 4 runs, 1 fish. A lovely mirror at 15lbs. Second rod was a roamer. Baits ranged from a tutti frutti pop-up to a fresh swan mussle plucked from the margin. 0 runs, 0 fish. GUTTED!!!
On Wednesday morning swim 1 became available. I moved in for the last 24 hrs. I fished one rod with a Heathrow Baits Services "Pukka Pinapple Pop-up" (say that when you've had a few!!) with a PVA bag full of CSL pellets, tight to the snags in the bay directly in front of the swim. Second rod I fished hard against the sunken tree in the left margin just before the bailiffs swim with a Trigga pop-up and PVA bag with CSL pellets. First run didn't materialise until 10:30pm. A cracking 18lbs 8oz solid lump of muscle. A beautiful streamlined common taken from the snags in the bay out front. SUITS YOU SIR! Second fish, also a beautiful common, came from the sunken tree to my left at 2am, 13lbs. Third and final fish came from open water (it was dark so couldn't cast to snags) on a "Pukka Pinapple Pop-up" single hook bait and also weighed in at 13lbs dead. All fish fought like Mike Tyson with a red hot poker stuck up his... well, you get the picture!
All in all a superb 72 hrs fishing (about 6 hours sleep in total!), a superb lake, superb bailiffs and a superb crowd of people fishing it... I would recommend it to anyone!!! (In my opinion, definitely not an easy water though!!)
Now say "Pukka Pinapple Pop-up" three times... :o)
Later... Boing.
