View Full Version : Well... I'm back from South Lake!

Well, first off an opinion...

Whoever is responsible for the adverts in the carp fishing press saying South Lake is an "easy" water should be tied up and eaten by rats (they always go for the eyes first you know...). Chatting to different bailiffs, opinions differ. Some say it is down to RMC, others that the carp press have been asked to no longer put in that particular advert claiming South Lake to be an easy water with a "good" chance of a twenty.

Because I only have opinions and no facts I can't blame either... but my opinion is that RMC should rectify this problem, and quickly!! There are beginner carp anglers travelling long distances to catch an "English twenty" and are coming away VERY disappointed. We should be encouraging new carp anglers, not misleading them! I repeat, this is purely my OPINION.

Now thats out of the way... WHAT A BEAUTIFUL WATER!! For those that are interested, I fished swim 17, "The Back Bay" from Monday morning to Wednesday morning. First rod under the bush to the left, fishing locked up solid and sleeping on my rods!!! Bait was either Trigga bottom bait or 1 inch pop-up, 4 runs, 1 fish. A lovely mirror at 15lbs. Second rod was a roamer. Baits ranged from a tutti frutti pop-up to a fresh swan mussle plucked from the margin. 0 runs, 0 fish. GUTTED!!!

On Wednesday morning swim 1 became available. I moved in for the last 24 hrs. I fished one rod with a Heathrow Baits Services "Pukka Pinapple Pop-up" (say that when you've had a few!!) with a PVA bag full of CSL pellets, tight to the snags in the bay directly in front of the swim. Second rod I fished hard against the sunken tree in the left margin just before the bailiffs swim with a Trigga pop-up and PVA bag with CSL pellets. First run didn't materialise until 10:30pm. A cracking 18lbs 8oz solid lump of muscle. A beautiful streamlined common taken from the snags in the bay out front. SUITS YOU SIR! Second fish, also a beautiful common, came from the sunken tree to my left at 2am, 13lbs. Third and final fish came from open water (it was dark so couldn't cast to snags) on a "Pukka Pinapple Pop-up" single hook bait and also weighed in at 13lbs dead. All fish fought like Mike Tyson with a red hot poker stuck up his... well, you get the picture!

All in all a superb 72 hrs fishing (about 6 hours sleep in total!), a superb lake, superb bailiffs and a superb crowd of people fishing it... I would recommend it to anyone!!! (In my opinion, definitely not an easy water though!!)

Now say "Pukka Pinapple Pop-up" three times... :o)

I agree Simon, to me that sounds easy!!
In fact the South IS an easy water, ok you do have to know what you are doing i.e. not just "chuck it and chance it", but it is not difficult by any means.
The one thing that everyone must always bare in mind.... There are NO guarantees in angling, if you blank then c'est la vie.
I don't think the ad's are misleading though, you do have a very good chance of a true english twenty.
Anyway at least you enjoyed yourself.
Be lucky

Hold on, am I reading this first post correctly?????????????

If when I was a beginner I had fished a lake for 72 hours and had 4 doubles up to over 18lbs I'd have been chuffed to bits.

Despite the press the reality of the situation is that 20lb English fish are not that easy to catch, if they were fishing would be boring.

I think you need to re plant your feet on planet earth, maybe you read too much press.

I spent my first 2 years carp fishing catching singles then in the 3rd caught my first double, the next few years were spent learning the trade with doubles and it's only the last few years I have been catching 20's.

My target this year is my first 30 and that's after 15 years carp fishing!!!!!!

I don't begrudge people catching big fish early in their career if they have worked for them but to complain that a water is advertised as easy, go and catch 4 doubles from it and then complain again because you didn't catch a 20 is bit over the top.

RMC cannot gaurantee you catch 20's, they can invest in a water so it contains such fish but the rest my friend is down to you!

No Crispy... Your not reading my original post correctly... at no time did I say I was new to carp fishing... and at no time did I say I was unhappy with what I had caught, nor the fact I hadn't caught a twenty... and yes my feet are planted very much on planet earth!!

Nor was I complaining that the water was too hard for me... four doubles with one beautiful common at 18lbs was what I class a fabulous weeks fishing and on a fabulous water too!!!

All I was saying was that I feel (and note that twice in my original post I mentioned it was purely MY opinion!) the advert is misleading to those that are new to carp fishing and expect to bag up on South Lake... the point you made about "dispite the press the reality is..." is exactly what I'm talking about... in my mind the press should give an ACCURATE account of the reality!! And the comment about reading too much press... well, for those that are new to carp fishing the angling press is where they learn valuable information about the technics of our sport from people that have been fishing for many years and are happy to past on their knowledge... So how can you critise these people for reading too much press?? Mind you, it's obvious to me you like to jump on the band wagon and critise newcomers to our sport rather than encourage them... I see the E.C.H.O. at the bottom of your note... baaaaa!

And finally... don't patronise me by calling me your friend... with an attitude like yours I find that inconceivable!!

P.S. If you feel inclined to reply to this mail... please read it PROPERLY first!!

Boing mate, don't take things too personally, maybe some people have misinterpreted your post and got your back up, but do try to be calm about it all, we are all friends mate, all anglers apart from a miniscule minority are all out to help each other.

Point taken Tony! Maybe I did get a little annoyed last night... I just got frustrated with people jumping in with two feet and chastising me before digesting what I had actually written!!

My apologies...

Well done on the South Lake by the way.....

Surely keeping debates like that public is what makes these forums interesting... as long as things don't get out of order of course!! :o)

In Crispy's defence I would like to say that he does try to help new comers to the sport and a couple of weeks ago jumped in at a days notice to help the kids on the pads lake for the weekend. He has also offered to help at the next junior fishins too.

I understand this to be true and Crispy should rightly be commended for this!!

I would also like to publicly withdraw my comments about Crispy supporting E.C.H.O. and apologise sincerely for them... Any organisation whose aim is to stop illegal importation of foreign carp should of course be supported by everyone who holds carp fishing dear... as I said earlier, I was tired, annoyed and frustrated by his comments. Though this is of course not a satisfactory excuse for my reaction! However I still stand by my opinion that his initial response to my opening post was, shall we say, a little shocking for me.

I would also like to take the opportunity to inform all those that read this thread that I have sent Crispy a private apology for my initial response to him!

Hopefully this clears up the whole episode and I can be forgiven for my outburst! Crispy?? :o)

Blimey, not looked at this one over the weekend, I never meant for this response!

Boing, sorry you took that so harshly, apologies accepted.

I think sometimes these forums (being in written form only)don't allow the expression with which they are meant. I din't mean to attack you.

I hope it's all forgotten, it is from my end!

Keeping it friendly and conducive!

Keeping it controversial but friendly!
