i am in the process of buying my mates cannon eos 10d dslr with lense and lots of bits and bobs very cheap but have no idea where to start will it be a camera that i can use or should i start else where???

just want good pics of mainly car events and fishy pics thats about it

Yes mate it will be perfect just take loads of pics to start with to get used to all the different settings.
Learn how apperture size ISO and shutterspeed relate to each other.
Try shooting in apperture priority mode to still let the camera choose speed and metering just play with the apperture size and get used to what effects you can get with different appertures etc..
Also join a forum you will learn loads.

practice at home before you try out the camera on the bank as you dont want any poor shots with a new pb!
