View Full Version : pre baiting for pike
It looks like the rain is going to stop for a week or 2 and I’m hoping the river Arun will back in to its banks soon. I have been fishing for pike on Arun for years now but I haven’t really had any luck with attracting any of the bigger pike that are in there so I was thinking about baiting up a spot. I’m not sure if this does more damage than good so if anyone has had any luck with this method I would really appreciate their advice thank you for reading the thread :)
Well i dont know about baiting with dead fish for the actual pike, but baiting with hemp, pellet and groundbait to pull the baitfish into an area works well. Id be worried about feeding the pike before i got there with fish prebait, but i have seen a pike eat well over a douzen fish in one day so they can pack it away when they want to.
Groundbaited with fish guts/parts/heads from local fishmonger in the past on stillwaters with good effect. Bl00dy messy though!
Rivers - I am not so sure? If the guts are free - try it - nothing to lose!

Baiting for Pike with Fish Offal works, but you need a water where not many people are fishing.
Otherwise you are doing the work and pulling the Pike into pre baited areas for other anglers to take advantage off ?

Trouble with most rivers, especially at this time of year is that the silvers shoal up in areas with precious little inbetween. The pike know this and hang around the dinner table until they feel hungry. These spots are always well known and fished so prebaiting will only benefit everyone and not just yourself as has been mentioned.
But....the pike are nomadic and move between these hot areas and often hang out in quieter spots, especially as a result of fishing pressure.
I don't know much about the Arun in particular but if you can find a spot that is'nt fished much and throws up the odd decent fish then prebaiting can be very worthwhile.
thank you for the advice its much appreciated :)
il let you know how it goes
years ago we used to prebait with deadbaits before fishing the nursery. worked very well, the baited spots consistantly outfished the rest.
have always made the effort to put in some prep for every species i have fished for since, realy pays dividends
